Why do they do that? SSN Numbers

Turlock Adult School asks you for your Social Security Number because
our grant funding requires that we follow up with students 6 months and
12 months after they leave us. Your SSN is used to determine if you have
gotten a new/better job and also to check to see if you’ve enrolled in a
college or trade school. Your name is never used, and your SSN is never
shared with anyone outside of the Department of Education. If you prefer
not to give us your SSN, we will be emailing/calling you to follow up.
Please respond to these emails and calls because this information is very
important for us to continue receiving funding and offering courses at little
to no cost.

9

Why do they do that? CASAS Tests

Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) tests are
administered to students in the High School Diploma, High School
Equivalency, English as a Second Language, and Adult Basic Education
programs. These tests serve two purposes: they allow students to see
how much progress they’ve made over the course of the year, and they
also serve as a way for us to evaluate our programs’ strengths and
weaknesses. We submit our results to CASAS, which provides feedback
on things we’re doing well, as well as areas where we could improve. We
receive funding based on both our compliance and our results. For this
reason it’s very important that all students take their pre- and post-tests.

The core mission of adult education is to provide adults with the basic
knowledge and skills they need to participate in civic life and the workforce.
Under state law, adult education can also serve various other purposes,
including offering enrichment classes. Turlock Adult School is committed
to providing enrichment opportunities to adults in Turlock and the
surrounding communities, but we are only able to do this if these classes are
self–supporting—the California Department of Education does not allow
state funds to be spent on providing these classes. The prices below reflect
the actual operating costs; Turlock Adult School does not make a profit on
Community Education classes.
After many course listings in this section, you will see the minimum number
of student enrollments that are required to cover the costs of the class. If this
minimum number is not met, the class may have to be cancelled. Because we
need time to notify students and issue refunds when classes are cancelled,
the decision has to be made a week before the first class date. Please register
as early as you can to prevent possible cancellations.
