EXPANSION JOINT
WHAT IS BUILDING EXPANSION JOINTS ?
STANDARDS FOLLOWED FOR THE BUILDING EXPANSION
Expansion joints are gaps or separations between long building JOINTS
structures, which are more than 30 meters in span, to allow them to
India Standard Code Book for Expansion Joints :
move and reduce the stress that occurs during Thermal expansion &
IS 3414 – 1968
contraction movements, seismic movements and vehicular passing.
IS 456 - 2000
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUILDING EXPANSION JOINTS ?
• Floor to Floor / Floor to Wall –1&2
• Wall to Wall / Wall to Corner –3&4
• Ceiling to Ceiling / Ceiling to Wall –5&6
• Roof to Roof / Roof to Corner
WHAT IS A BUILDING EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM ?
Building expansion joint systems are Mechanical Systems used to fill the void of the expansion joint gap in the buildings to
ensure the walkability of pedestrians and the movement of vehicles, during the thermal expansion and contraction
movement in the building including seismic movements.

HOW DOES A EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM FUNCTION?

Before knowing about the functionality of the expansion joint systems we should know how the building movement works !!

Typically the building moves along X,Y & Z axis due to the thermal expansion , Contraction and the seismic movement
of the building

The following are the different types of movement in the building

• Movement along Y axis - Horizontal Movements

• Movement along Z axis - Vertical Movements
• Movement along X axis - Transverse Movement
• Movement along X,Y & Z - Seismic Movement
BUILDING MOVEMENT

• Horizontal Movements

• Vertical Movements

• Transverse Movement
BASIC PRINCIPLE OF THE EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEMS

A expansion joint functions by the principle of Expansion and

Contraction of the mechanical system without exposing the
expansion joint gap by functioning parallel to the buildings
expansion & contraction movement due to thermal & seismic
action, ensuring the walkability of the pedestrians and the
movement of the vehicles.
HOW ARE EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEMS DESIGNED?
Basically the Expansion join systems are designed base on the following 4 criteria

1. Expansion Gap size/Width – Data provided by the client / Structural Engineer

2. Percentage of movement – Data provided by the client / Structural Engineer
3. Load acting on the Expansion joint System – Data provided by the client / Structural Engineer
4. Type of Expansion joint system – Depends on the requirement and type of building structure

EXPANSION JOINT GAP SIZES ? DIFFERENT PERCENTAGE OF MOVEMENTS ?

Gap Size varies form 25mm to 600mm depending upon the • 25 %
movement requirement of the building, decided by the structural • 50 %
engineer, considering the location and the type of building • 100 %

DIFFERENT TYPE OF LOADING CRITERIA ?

• Pedestrian Loading – 2kN to 3 kN – UDL (uniform distribution load)
• Vehicular loading – 5kN to 9kN – PL (point load) & UDL (uniform distribution load)
• Fire Tender loading – 40 kN to 45kN – UDL (uniform distribution load)

DIFFERENT TYPE OF EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM?

• Turn Bar system
• Slide System
• Elastomeric / EPDM / Rubber seal system
Further the above 3 systems are classified depending upon the loading requirement to heavy duty or normal systems
FUNCTIONALITY OF DIFFERENT TYPE EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM?

1. TURN BAR SYSTEM 2. SLIDE SYSTEM

The turn bar system works The slide system works
under the principle of under the principle of
keeping the cover plate sliding the cover plate
intact to the expansion joint over the expansion joint
system using a dedicated gap by keeping the cover
composite mechanical bar plate intact to system by
made out of steel and PVC side extrusion members,
which are anchored to the during the movement of
cover plate, during the the building
movement of the building

3. ELASTOMERIC SEAL / EPDM / RUBBER SYSTEM

This system works under

the principle of elongation
and contraction by using
the elastic properties of
the rubber/EPDM, during
the movement of the
building
WORKING OF A TYPICAL EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM (TURN BAR SYSTEM)

• Horizontal Movement & Turn bar functionality

WORKING OF A TYPICAL EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM (TURN BAR SYSTEM)

• Vertical Movement & Turn bar functionality

• Transverse Movements & Turn bar functionality

WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS FOLLOWED FOR THE EXPANSION JOINTS SYSTEMS ?
Cyclic Movement tests : ASTM E1399-97
.
Cyclic movement can be defined as the motion undertaken by a system that follows a repeating path over time

DIFFERENT TYPE OF MATERIAL USED IN EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEMS
