LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS 11

November 16, 2022

I. Topic: Evaluating Functions

Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of

functions.
Performance Standards: The learner is able to accurately construct mathematical
models to represent real-life situations using functions.
K to 12 CG Code: M11GM-Ia-2
Reference:
General Mathematics Learner’s Material, pages 10 - 12
Materials:
power point presentation, flash cards, colored paper, manila paper, pentel pen,
kahoot application
Targets:
At the end of the learning period 100% of the learners with at least 75%
proficiency level should be able to:
a. evaluate functions;
b. solve problems involving functions; and
c. practice cooperation.

II. Learning Procedure

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill (5 mins)
Practice the learners on the manipulation of numbers using the four
fundamental operations (Krypto Game).

2. Review (5 mins)
GRADE 10’s BLUFF

Tell FACT if the statement is correct and BLUFF if it is wrong.

1. Functions are rules that relate only one value from the set of outputs to
value from the set of inputs.
2. All functions are relations.
3. Domain of a relation is the set of all possible values that the variable x can
take.
4. The relation f = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 5), (4, 7)} is NOT a function.
5. A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical line intersects the
graph at most once.
3. Motivation (8 mins)
Play the “Cabbage Game”.
Directions: Students will form a big circle and will pass around the cabbage
formed paper while singing a song. When the teacher said Stop the
student who is holding the paper will peel off a piece of paper, and will
read and answer the question written on it.

Questions:
1. What is a function?
2. Is g = {(1, 3), (1, 4), (2, 5), 2, 6), (3, 7)} a function?
3. What is a relation?
4. What is the domain of the function y = 2x + 1?

B. Presentation (15 mins)

Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the function with a value
from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote that we are
evaluating f at x for some x in the domain of f, we write f(x).
Examples:
1. Let f(x) = 3x – 2, find the following:
a. f(0)
b. f(5)
c. f(-2)

Solution:
a. f(0) = 3(0) – 2 = –2
b. f(5) = 3(5) – 2 = 15 – 2 = 13
c. f(-2) = 3(–2) – 2 = –6 – 2 = –8

2. Evaluate g(x) = x2 – 3x + 8, when x = - 4.

Solution:
g(x) = x2 – 3x + 8
g(-4) = (-4)2 – 3(-4) + 8
g(-4) = 16 +12 + 8
g(-4) = 36

3. Every weekend Renz is playing Mobile Legends and he goes to a computer

shop for his internet connection. The computer shop charges h(x) = 10x + 5 where
x is the number of hours, per hour of his internet connection. How much Renz
will pay if he uses the internet connection for 3 hours?

Solution:
h(x) = 10x + 5
h(3) = 10(3) + 5
h(3) = 30 + 5
h(3) = 35
Renz will be paying 35 pesos as charge in his internet connection.

C. Activity (8 mins)
Divide the class into five groups consisting of advanced, average, and struggling
learners.
Directions: Each group will answer the given items and the guide questions.
Every group member must answer first the questions in their notebook.
Members of the group can help each other in answering and will write
their final group answer in manila paper. The first group to finish will get
a prize.
Answer the following:
1. Evaluate the following functions at x = 4.
a. f(x) = x – 4
b. g(x) = x2 – 3x + 6
2 x +2
c. h(x) =
3
2. Jose loves to ride on his motorcycle. One day he decided to travel on a certain
speed (in km per hour) and the distance travelled is given by d(x) = 3x + 14,
where x is the number of hours. How far did Jose travel after 3 hours?

Guide Questions:
1. What are the steps that you have done in evaluating the given functions?
2. How did you solve word problems involving functions?

Generalization:
How do you evaluate functions?
How do you solve word problems involving functions?
To evaluate functions, just replace all the values of x in the equation and simplify.
To solve word problems involving functions, follow the following steps:
Step 1: Know what is asked in the problem.
Step 2: Identify the given.
Step 3: Solve.
Step 4: Review or Check and Interpret.
Valuing:
What did you do to finish the activity? Why is it important to practice
cooperation?

Application: (11 mins)

Present the three learning areas to the learners. Each learner will be given a
chance to select the area that he/she wants to be in. Let each learner answers the
geometric sequence problems in the learning area he/she belongs. (Note: If there is still
enough time, let the students transfer from one learning area to the other.)
Learning Area A: The Ball Lovers
Mayor Francis Amboy is a basketball enthusiast. He announces to hold a
basketball friendly game between the Mathematics teachers and the members of the
Sangguniang Bayan. He invited Sir Wine to do the tossing of the ball at the start of the
game. Sir Wine throw the ball upward with a velocity V (m/s) after t seconds is given by
V(t) = 5 + 2t. What is the velocity of the ball after 1 second? After 2 seconds?

Learning Area B: The Plantitos/Plantitas

Julie loves to collect varieties of flowering plants. With the limited space she had
in her backyard, she decided to sell her plants. The profit in pesos she had in selling the
plants is given by the function f(x) = 2x + 180, where x is the number of plants sold. How
much is the profit of Julie if she sold 10 plants? 15 plants?

Learning Area C: The Bankers

Angel is attending limited face-to-face classes as a Grade 11 student. She is
having an alternate one week face-to-face and modular classes. Since she’s not in school
every week, the amount of money in pesos she saves per week is given by the function
h(x) = 3x + 38, where x is the number of weeks. How much money did Angel save after 3
weeks? After 5 weeks?
III. Learning Evaluation (8 mins)

a. 2x + 22 b. 2x2 - 11 c. x2 + 11 d. 2x2 + 11
10. Mr. Albert Sanchez made eco bags every weekend as his other source of income
for his family. The profit he made by producing eco bags is given by the function f(x)

IV. Assignment
Directions: Read and answer the given problem in your notebook.

ML computer shop charges 30. 00 pesos per hour (or a fraction of an hour)
for the first two hours, and additional of 15.00 per hour for each succeeding hour.
How much would you pay if you used one of its computers for 4 hours? How
much would you pay if you used one of its computers for 45 minutes?
