INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Complete Basketball Playbook!

Inside this resource, we’ve provided a comprehensive collection of proven

plays, tactics, and strategies designed for teams of all ages and competitive
levels. These plays will help prepare your team to succeed, offensively and
defensively, no matter what your competition throws at you.

The book is divided into five chapters:

1. Man to Man Offense

2. Zone Offense
3. Set Plays
4. Sideline Inbounds Plays
5. Baseline Inbounds Plays

Each play includes the following sections:

• Difficulty: a rating (from one to five) indicating the experience/skill

level required
• Setup: the formation of your players to start the play
• Execution: step by step responsibilities and reads for each position on
the floor
• Options: the various opportunities the play presents, and variations
that will help you out-smart your opponents

As a coach, we recommend you review all of the plays, then choose one
from each chapter to focus on. Choose plays that fit the experience level
and personnel available on your team. Introduce them one at a time, and
devote at least one quarter of your practice time to rehearsing them with
your team. Emphasize the importance of flawless execution, and be sure to
practice the plays at game speed, with hard cuts and crisp passes.

Ready to go? Let's get started!

KEY TO DIAGRAMS
Point Guard (or 1): this player is your primary ballhandler and
PG the coach’s extension on the floor. They should be comfortable
directing traffic and calling plays for your team

Shooting Guard (or 2): this player is your secondary ballhandler,

SG and often one of your better shooters. They should be
comfortable initiating the offense from the perimeter.

Small Forward (or 3): this player is often one of your more ver-
SF satile athletes, able to score from inside or outside, handle the
ball, and rebound.

Power Forward (or 4): this should be one of your taller athletes,
PF a physical player who can score on the inside, defend the paint,
and rebound.

Center (or 5): this is usually your tallest athlete, a player who can
C block or alter shots on defense, rebound aggressively at both
ends, and finish consistently on the inside.

MAN TO MAN OFFENSE
Man to man offense is the bread and butter of your half court attack – the “base” offensive strategy you use
whenever you encounter a man to man defense. And the first series of plays you install at the start of your
season.

In this chapter, we’ll review man to man offenses from three different formations: the 3/2 Motion, the 5-Out,
and the Triangle.

The 3/2 Motion is the simplest to install, and the one I recommend for most youth basketball teams. It
provides balanced scoring opportunities from each position, with some simple actions that are easy to teach
and easy to execute.

The 5-Out Offense opens up the lane by spreading all five players around the perimeter. We’ll review a simple
give and go play from this formation, as well as a basic Dribble Drive offense that’s recommended for more
experienced (and talented) teams.

Last, we’ll review the Triangle Offense, made famous by Phil Jackson’s dominant Bulls and Lakers teams. This
offense creates a number of options using a “sideline triangle” on the strong side (ball side) and a two-man
game on the weak side (non-ball side). It’s an excellent choice for teams with high basketball IQ and plenty of
practice time to work on it.

4. 3-2 Motion – Block Stack

Setup:
This play begins a little differently, but uses the same 3 out 2 in formation once the play is
initiated. The point guard will still start out at the top of the arc with the ball, but the rest off
the offense will be down on the block. The center on the right block with the small forward
below him, and the power forward on the left block with the shooting guard just below him.

5. 3/2 Motion - High Low
Exchange

Setup:
This is a variation on the 3/2 that shifts the formation slightly, while maintaining the same
personnel (three perimeter players and two bigs). Begin with the shooting guard down in the
right corner, the small forward in the left corner, and the power forward on the right block. The
center will start at the top of the arc, and the point guard will begin on the right side of the
court at about the hash mark.

backdoor cut, looking to receive the pass for a lay up on the give and go.
2. If that isn’t there, the small forward will slide up to the top of the arc, with the center
replacing him on the left wing and point guard taking his spot down in the left corner.

Options:
• There’s only one option on this play – the give and go. If it isn’t there, the shooting guard
should look to reset the ball up at the top of the arc, swing the ball to the other side, and
try another give and go cut.
• Or, move into the Dribble Drive offense described on the next page.

8. Triangle Offense – PG Fill,
Corner Pick and Roll

Setup:
There are a couple different way to get into the triangle offense, and a multitude of options
available after that, that can be mixed and matched as you please.

They will all begin with the same setup – two guards up top, the point guard on the right, and
the shooting guard on the left. The small forward will be on the right wing, with the center
down on the block. The power forward will line up just above the short corner on the left side.

Triangle Offense– Alternate
Entries

Power Forward Fill

Setup:
This is a basic man to man set that you can run
from side to side in continuity.

We’ll start in a classic 3/2 (3 out 2 in) formation,

with the point guard at the top of the arc with the
ball, the shooting guard on the right wing and the
small forward on the left wing, the power forward
down on the right block, and the center on the left
block. Figure 1: PF Fill

Execution:
The point guard will pass to the small forward,
then space out to the top of the arc, while
the shooting guard slides down to the power
forward’s spot, and the power forward sprints
along the baseline to fill in on the ball side
corner.

Dribble Entry
Setup:
• The point guard and shooting guard will line
up top, with the power forward in the short
corner, the center down on the right block, and
the small forward on the right wing.

Execution:
Here, the point guard will simply dribble right Figure 2: Dribble Entry

the corner while the shooting guard slides over
to the top of the arc.

10.
Triangle Offense – Alternate
Options

Post Feed
Execution:
1. With the offense already having executed one of the
three triangle entry options, the ball will be on the
wing, with the small forward in the corner and the
center on the block, forming our primary triangle.
2. The small forward will sprint along the baseline, filling
up on the weak side wing.
3. The point guard will pass the ball down into the post,
then step up to set a screen for the shooting guard at
the top of the arc, after which he will fill into the far
side corner.
Figure 1: Post Feed
Options:
• The idea here is to give our best post player a
chance to go one on one down low, with enough
movement and spacing that the defense will have
a hard time helping.
• If the center is unable to create a good look for
himself, he can simply kick it out, and we are back
in our base triangle offense.

Two Man Game

Execution:
1. Again, with the offense having already gone through
the entry, we have a player in the corner and the ball
on the wing.
2. To run the two man game, we will have the point guard
hit the shooting guard with a pass, who will then pass
it to the power forward flashing up the elbow.
3. He will then cut off the power forwards shoulder,
looking to receive the handoff or a backdoor pass for
the easy layup.

Figure 2: Two Man Game

Options:
• It is also an option for the shooting guard to use the
power forward as a screener, dribbling at him and
using his pick to set up a pick and roll scenario.
• Either way, the ballhandler must read the defense
and either take the shot or pass to his teammate
based on how they play the situation.

ZONE OFFENSE
Zone Defense – it’s a thorn in the side of coaches at every level. It allows your opponents to clog up the
paint and prevent high percentage shots. It helps them to minimize matchup problems and “hide” weaker
defenders. And it makes it easier for them to slow down the tempo and force the game into a mechanical
slog.

But fear not! There are many ways to beat a zone.

When a team switches to zone defense you can’t simply continue to run your man to man offense against it.
You need to have a few actions you can run designed specifically for attacking the zone.

This section will walk you through the basics of zone offense, and provide you with several plays, proven to
help you score against the zone at every competitive level.

This should be the second offense you install at the start of your season (after your man to man offense).

When you’re running these plays, it’s important you keep the ball moving quickly – as the zone shifts back and
forth as you swing the ball from side to side, you need to be ready to attack the opening, either via pass and
cut, or dribble penetration.

It’s also important to prepare for the eventuality of a zone defense by getting shots up in practice. The goal of
most zones is to clog up the middle, leaving them more susceptible to leaving shooters open on the outside.

The best way to attack the zone is by pushing the ball inside, forcing the defense to collapse, and kicking it
back out to an open shooter, and it goes without saying, that the more shooters you have on your team, the
more dangerous it is for other teams to run zone defenses.

Setup:
The offense will start out in the standard 3-2 alignment, with the point guard up top with the
ball, the shooting guard on the right wing, and the small forward on the left wing. The power

SET PLAYS
In addition to your base man to man and zone offenses, it’s a good idea to have at least one or two “set
plays” you can call upon when you really need a basket.

Sometimes called “quick hitters” - these plays are designed to get you an open shot within one or two
passes. Coaches will often use these plays to mix up their offensive look and throw the defense a bit off
balance. They’re also great for special situations - after a timeout, the first play of a quarter or half, when you
really need a three pointer, or at the end of a game for a buzzer beater.

In this section, we’ll review 10 different set plays from a variety of different formations. Pick one or two that fit
the strengths of your team, and work on them periodically.

When it comes to game-time, it’s always a good idea to review the play on a whiteboard right before you run
it, to refresh your team’s memory and make sure they execute it properly.
