Introductory Message
The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools
Division of Escalante City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the
Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the
learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.
The Mathematics 9 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or
no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

In this Learning Activity Sheet, you will learn how to solve equations involving
radical expression. As you proceed to the exercises, you will develop skills in solving
radical equations and somehow relate those skills to solving real-life problems.
Solving equations involving radical expression means solving for the value of x or
any variable that will make the equation true.

Questions:
1. How would you define an extraneous root based on the illustrative examples?
2. What data have you used to define an extraneous root?
3. How is the process of checking related to finalizing your answer to a problem?
4. What insights have you gained from this discussion?
4
Let us consolidate the results.
Important: If the square of two numbers are equal, the numbers may or may not be equal.
Such as, (−3)2 = 32, but – check any possible solutions
for radical equations, because in squaring both sides of a radical equation, it is possible to
get extraneous solutions.
