Self-Learning Module 4
Types of Measuring
Instruments and their Uses
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education 9) Self-Learning Module
on (Types of Measuring Instruments and their Uses)!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education 9) Self-Learning Module
on (Types on Measuring Instruments and their Uses)!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

LESSON

Introduction

There are a lot of different measuring tools that help in measuring. Each one
measures its own things. Accurate measurement is the basis of good result and good
quality output. However, accuracy of any measuring device depends on the user as
much as on the design of the tool because all measuring tools are precision tools.
Therefore, it is a must to take good care of them to keep them in good shape to
maintain accuracy. Measuring is not only checking the length, width or thickness of
an objects but also checking of the shape – things like the flatness, straightness,
roundness or squareness. Measuring tools are also used for inspecting a finished or
partly finished product.

Types of Measuring Instruments and their Uses

1. T-Square- is a tool for drawing horizontal lines and measures up to a straight

line of 48 inches. It is made of wood or plastic and has T-shape. The vertical
part of T-square is known as the blade, and the horizontal part is called the
head. The head shall be standard and attached to the wall.

Three types of T-square:

a. Fixed head-is fastened to the blade and used for ordinary work.
b. Movable head or adjustable head-It consists of one fixed and flexible head
and used for occasional drawing.
c. Detachable head or removable head-It is equipped for comfort while
holding T-square.

2. Triangles- are used to draw lines with an angle to each other. For most
systems, lines 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees are most common. The triangles are
of two forms. This triangle set at 45 degrees and has a side of 25 cm and the
triangle set at 30 –60 degrees has a length of 25 cm on one side. Both are
required for drawing.

3. Ruler- is the most common type of measuring instrument, usually 6 or 12
inches in length, which is used to measure sizes and distances.

4. Triangular Scale- the primary objective of general drawing is to duplicate the

dimension in full size or to decrease or broaden it on a drawing. Scales help
the illustrator keep the proportions precise.

5. Protractor-is used to draw and accurately measure the angles of the line in
the image. This is translucent and made out of plastic. A form of a semi-circle
and its edge consists of one-degree reading accuracy. The bottom row
connects the 0° o 180°.

6. Divider-is used to divide distances into a series of equal parts. Measuring,

passing or labeling distances instrument typically consists of two straight
adjustable legs aligned together and ending in sharp points.

7. Vernier Caliper-are used to calculate the distance between two sides of an

object. These look like a double "F." One side of the instrument has a big "F"
that's used to calculate the outside of the piece. The other side is the tiny "f"
used to calculate the inside of an object. The center mast has measurement
markings that allow you to get the perfect opening size for your project.

8. Clamp Meter-Is an electric test device integrating a simple digital multimeter
with a current sensor. The current is calculated by clamps. Probes test
voltage.

meter#:~:text=A%20clamp%20meter%20is%20an,Probes%20measure%20voltage.

9. Micrometers-it measures an object’s length, width, and thickness.

https://healthyhandyman.com/types-of-measuring-tools/

10. MULTIMETER-referred to as multi-tester or VOM (Volt-Ohm-Millimeter), is

an electronic measurement device accustomed measure different electrical
parameter. A typical multimeter can calculate voltage, current, resistance,
continuity, frequency, and capacitance. This also includes integrated non-
contact voltage detectors.

Multimeter is classified as:

a. Analog multimeter-uses a moving pointer micro amplifier to point out the
readings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter

b. Digital multimeter (DMM, DVOM) - displays the value in a numeric form with
a graphic bar that reflects the calculated value.

https://ph.element14.com/duratool/d03124/digital-multimeter-auto
Parts of the Multimeter:
1. Scale- have an arc-shaped scales visible to the eye and a pointer showing the
scale reading values.

2. Needle Pointer- is the needle-shaped rod that moves over the scale of the meter.

https://www.electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-use/

3. Adjustment Screw- it allows you to adjust the pointer to a zero position of the
scale.

https://www.electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-use/

4. Zero Ohm Adjustment- is used to calibrate the multimeter when you want to
measure the resistance of an object.

https://www.electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-use/
5. Range Selector Knob-It helps to adjust the feature between volts, ohms and amps
and to adjust the measuring scale (x1, x10, etc.).

https://www.electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-use/

6. Test Probes- Physical device used for attaching the electronic testing equipment
to the test device.

https://www.electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-use/

11. Tape measure-is a thin metal tape that is labelled to be measured every
size, inch and distance.

https://healthyhandyman.com/types-of-measuring-tools/

12. LCR meter-is used for calculating the inductance, capacitance and
resistance of components of electronics.
