REPORT TEXT

Written by: Putri Adelia and Anisa Aulia

Description

A Report Text is a type of text used to present factual information about a

phenomenon or object in a systematic and objective way. The purpose of a Report Text is to
provide a general overview of something, often based on scientific research or observation.
The subject of a Report Text can be living things (such as animals, plants), human-made
objects (such as machines, buildings), or natural phenomena (such as volcanoes, weather).

This text explains information in a general and non-subjective manner. The

information presented must be verifiable based on available data or facts, without involving
the author's personal opinions or feelings. Therefore, Report Texts are often found in
scientific reports, encyclopedias, journals, or other academic sources. Additionally, the
language used in a Report Text is typically formal and structured, with many technical terms
depending on the topic being discussed.

One of the key features of a Report Text is its general structure, which consists of two
main parts: general classification and description. The general classification section provides
a basic overview of the subject being discussed, while the description section gives more
details about important aspects of the subject, such as physical characteristics, behavior,
habitat, or function. Report Texts are used in various fields, ranging from natural sciences,
technology, to social sciences, where clear facts and data are needed to describe an object or
phenomenon thoroughly.

For example, a Report Text about "Elephants" would include general information
about elephants as large mammals living in Africa and Asia, along with details about their
physical characteristics, social behavior, diet, and ecological role. There is no subjective view
or personal interpretation from the author, only the presentation of information based on
available facts.

Generic Structure

Report texts also only have two common structures (generic structure), namely:
1. General Classification
Tells what the phenomenon under discussion is.
2. Description
Tells what the phenomenon under discussion is like in terms of
• Parts
• Qualities
• Habits or behaviors, if living; uses, if non-natural

Significant Lexicogrammatical Features

There are some characteristics of Report text such as:
(1) Use of general nouns, for example hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, e.g.
our dog;
(2) Use of relating verbs to describe features, e.g. Molecules are tiny particles;
(3) Some use of action verbs when describing behavior, e.g. Emus cannot fly;
(4) Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness, e.g. Tropical cyclones always
begin over the sea;
(5) Use of technical terms, e.g. Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map;
(6) Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to organize bundles of information;
repeated naming of the topic as the beginning focus of the clause.

Besides the characteristics above, the following is the language feature of Report
Text.
Language feature:
a. Report text usually uses general nouns (e.g.: elephants, computers, orchids).
b. Report text usually uses relating verb: be (e.g.: is, are, was, were) for classification.
c. Report text usually uses present tense (e.g. A table usually has four legs), and use
past time if the thing is extinct.
d. Report text usually uses adjective or adjective phrase in describing things,
especially in describing qualities.
e. Report text usually uses verb "have": has, have, or had to give detailed description.
f. The use of behavioral verbs (e.g.: snakes often sunbathe in the sun).

Example
Qouted example:

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering
an area of approximately 5.5 million square kilometers across nine countries in South
America, with the majority of the forest located in Brazil. Often referred to as the
“lungs of the Earth,” the Amazon produces 20% of the world’s oxygen and plays a
crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate. This vast rainforest is home to an
incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna, with millions of species, many of which
have yet to be scientifically identified.
The Amazon’s biodiversity includes a wide variety of animals such as jaguars,
sloths, and pink river dolphins, along with countless plant species that are important
for medicinal purposes. The forest is also home to numerous indigenous tribes who
have lived there for thousands of years, relying on the forest for shelter, food, and
traditional medicines.
However, the Amazon is facing severe threats from deforestation, illegal
logging, and fires, largely due to agricultural expansion and human activities. This has
not only led to the destruction of habitats but also contributed to global climate
change by releasing large amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere. Efforts to
protect the Amazon include reforestation programs, sustainable land management, and
enforcing laws to curb illegal activities.

Created Example:

Dolphins

Dolphins are intelligent marine mammals belonging to the family Delphinidae.

Known for their playful behavior and complex social structures, there are about 40
species, including the bottlenose dolphin and orca. They inhabit oceans worldwide,
primarily in shallow coastal waters.
Recognized for their streamlined bodies, dolphins are agile swimmers with a
layer of blubber for warmth. They communicate using clicks, whistles, and body
language, essential for social interaction and navigation. Dolphins exhibit problem-
solving abilities and have been seen using tools, like marine sponges, to forage.
Despite their friendly nature, dolphins face threats from habitat loss, pollution,
and hunting, with some populations endangered due to bycatch in fishing gear. Global
conservation efforts aim to protect dolphin habitats through public awareness
campaigns and marine protected areas.

Conclusion of Report text:

Report Text is an effective type of text for conveying factual information about
objects, phenomena, or living beings in a systematic and objective manner. With a
clear structure consisting of general classification and description, Report Text
provides an in-depth understanding of the topics discussed. Its characteristics, which
include a focus on facts, the use of formal language, and objectivity, make it a reliable
source of information.
