THE OAKWOOD MONTESSORI SCHOOL

WEEKLY LESSON PLAN

Easter Term
Class: Year 6
Week: 6
Subjects: Science
Topic: DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Objective: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to
a. Define digestion.
b. Mention the organs needed for digestion and their functions.
c. Give reasons why the digestive system is essential to all animals and
how it works.
d. Explain what an enzyme is and how it helps to digest food.

Materials Needed: videos, pictures, human anatomy model

Keywords: Ingestion, enzymes, gastrointestinal tract

Procedure:
 The teacher invites the pupils to the work center and revises the last
lesson with reinforcing question.
 The teacher introduces the lesson by saying; today we are going to
learn about the Digestive system and states the objectives clearly.
 The pupils define digestion and the teacher builds on it.
 The pupils state reasons why digestion is important.
 The pupils explain how the digestive system breaks down food.
 From this site, https://www.innerbody.com/anatomy/digestive/upper-
torso, the pupils study the digestive process and what happens in the
body.

 The teacher presents some flash cards organs to the pupils as they
build a digestive model and also describes what happens in the
digestives organs.
 The pupils mention some enzymes and the food that they break down.
 They also learn about digestion in other animals.
 The pupils differentiate the following terms, ingestion, digestion &
egestion.
 The teacher plays the video for the pupils as she summarizes the
lessons by reviewing the objectives.

The Digestive System

 The energy required for all the activities that take place in our bodies is
derived from the foods we ingest.

 The process of digestion takes place in the gastrointestinal tract, a long,

connected, tubular structure that starts with the mouth and ends with the
anus. This breakdown of food is called digestion. Food can be digested
physically or with the help of digestive juices.

 The organ of the digestive system are

 The mouth: Saliva is released by the salivary glands into our oral cavity when
we smell food. Once the food enters the mouth, chewing (mastication)
breaks food into smaller particles that can be more easily attacked by the
enzymes in saliva.

 The esophagus: Food is moved down the esophagus and into our stomach.
The esophagus is a muscular tube that contracts (peristalsis) to move food
down towards the stomach.

 The stomach and small intestine: From glands that line the stomach, acid
and enzymes are secreted that continue the breakdown process of the food.
The stomach muscles further mix the food. At the end of this process, the
food you placed in your mouth has been transformed to a thick creamy fluid
called chyme.

 This thick fluid is then pushed into the duodenum (the first part of the small
intestine). With the help of enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the
liver, further breakdown of the food occurs in the small intestine.

 Large Intestine: The leftover waste leaves through the large intestine.

 Other organs are useful in digestion are.

1. Pancreas: It is the main producer of digestive enzymes These enzymes

are released into the duodenum and help with the digestion of fats,
proteins, and carbohydrates..
2. Liver: The liver produces bile for fat digestion and elimination.
3. Gallbladder: Bile is stored and released from the gallbladder. When
fatty food enters the duodenum, the gallbladder contracts and releases
bile.
