Course Code: MET425

Course Name: QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR ENGINEERS
Max. Marks: 100 Duration: 3 Hours

PART A
Answer all questions, each carries 3 marks. Marks

1 Write down the generalised mathematical expression for a linear programming problem. (3)
2 Explain the concept of redundancy in LPP with a suitable example. (3)
3 Discuss the different steps involved in North-West corner method for solving (3)
transportation problems.
4 Formulate a general assignment problem with constraints. (3)
5 Summarise any three rules followed in sequencing problem. (3)
6 What is the role of network diagram in project management? (3)
7 Describe the different types of decision-making environments. (3)
8 Distinguish between maximin and minimax principle in game theory. (3)
9 Define arrival rate and service rate in queuing theory. (3)
10 Briefly, explain any three applications of simulation models. (3)
PART B
Answer any one full question from each module, each carries 14 marks.
Module I
11 A company manufactures two types of products, P and Q. Both uses milling and turning (14)
for its production. The process time required for product P is 10 hours milling and 8 hours
turning per unit, whereas for product Q, it is 20 hours and 8 hours for milling and turning
respectively. The maximum hours available per week on milling machine and lathe (for
turning) are 120 hours and 80 hours respectively. The profit per unit on sale of product P
and Q is Rs.12 and Rs.16, respectively. Formulate and solve a LP model to find the
production volume of P and Q such that the total profit is maximized.
OR
12 Solve the following LP problem using suitable method. (14)
Maximize z = 12 x1 + 16 x2

Subject to constraints:

10x1 + 20x2 ≤ 120

8x1 + 8x2 ≤ 80

x1, x2 ≥ 0
Module II
13 Find the optimal solution for the following transportation problem. (14)

OR
14 Solve the following assignment problem using Hungarian method. The matrix entries are (14)
processing time of each man in hours.

Module III
15 For the sequencing problem given below, determine the optimal sequence, Total elapsed (14)
time, and idle time on machines I & II. (Time given in Minutes).

16 An R & D project has a list of tasks to be performed whose time estimates (days) are (14)
given in the table, as follows.

i. Draw the project network

ii. Find the critical path and expected completion time
Module IV
17 An investor wants to decide which of the three properties to buy. Make the best decision (14)
using the minimax regret & maximax criterion.

OR
18 Solve the following pay-off matrix with respect to Player A. (14)

Determine the best strategies for players A & B and also the value of the game.
Module V
19 The city council of a small town has decided to build a tennis court in the central park. (14)
Players are expected to arrive on the average of 10 sets of players per 12 hour a day.
Playing time is exponentially distributed with a mean of 1 hour. Arrivals are Poisson.
What are the expected queuing statistics assuming the basic single server model?
OR
