The Importance of Academic Freedom and Proctored Exams in

University Studies
The two policies I found in the University’s Undergraduate Catalog are Academic Freedom
and Proctored Exams. These policies are foundational pillars of university education,
particularly at the University of the People (UoPeople). They not only ensure a high standard
of learning and assessment but also uphold the integrity and credibility of the university’s
academic environment. Together, they contribute to a system that encourages intellectual
exploration while maintaining fairness and accountability.

Academic freedom is essential for fostering critical thinking and open inquiry. It guarantees
that instructors can teach and research freely, while students can explore diverse
perspectives and form their own conclusions. This policy encourages a vibrant academic
environment where knowledge is pursued without undue interference. For example,
instructors can critique societal norms or propose innovative ideas, and students are
empowered to engage in meaningful discussions on intellectual, academic, and moral
concerns. However, this freedom is balanced with responsibilities: instructors must adhere to
the curriculum, and both students and faculty are expected to maintain civility and respect in
their interactions. This balance ensures that academic freedom does not devolve into
disorder but remains a tool for intellectual growth.

Similarly, proctored exams play a critical role in maintaining academic integrity and
ensuring equitable assessment. By requiring students to complete exams under the
supervision of approved proctors, UoPeople safeguards the credibility of its degrees.
Proctored exams minimize opportunities for dishonesty, allowing instructors to accurately
assess students' understanding of course material. This is particularly important in a global
online university, where consistent standards are necessary to ensure fairness. The
proctoring process also instills discipline and accountability in students, as they are
responsible for coordinating with proctors and adhering to the exam schedule.

The integration of these two policies highlights the university’s commitment to both
intellectual freedom and rigorous evaluation. Academic freedom encourages the exploration
of ideas, while proctored exams ensure that the knowledge gained is assessed fairly and
transparently. For instance, a business administration student may explore innovative
strategies in a marketing class thanks to academic freedom, and later demonstrate their
understanding through a proctored exam. This combination ensures that learning is both
expansive and accountable.

In conclusion, academic freedom and proctored exams are vital components of a robust
educational system. Together, they create an environment where students and instructors
can explore, discuss, and assess knowledge in a fair and respectful manner. By upholding
these principles, UoPeople not only enhances the quality of education but also prepares
students for ethical and informed participation in their fields of study.
