Lab Exam - Questions 2024
Lab Exam - Questions 2024
Each student is assigned ONE experiment for the examination out of 11 experiments through a lottery.
Fresnel’s bi-prism is excluded for the practical exam. but included in the theory exam.
Observations in the form of tables has to be written down in such a sheet.
The questions for the experiments is listed below.
Q. Using a pair of polarizers, to verify the Malus' law and plot the intensity profile as a function of angle between the
polarizers (~20 readings, up to 360°).
Q. Measure the beam spot size (only along x) of the given laser beam at two different distances by taking ~15 readings.
Plot the intensity profile for any one data-set. Estimate the beam divergence angle.
Q. Determine the numerical aperture of the optical fiber by choosing two distances between the fiber and the
detector. Take ~15 readings for each data set. Plot the intensity profile for any one data-set.
Q. Determine the velocity of ultrasonic wave in a given liquid medium using the second order of diffraction of sodium
light of wavelength 589 nm.
Q. Obtain the circular fringes due to the interference in Michelson interferometer. Determine the value of wavelength,
using calibration constant k = 0.01. (Use five sets of 20 fringes.)
Q. Make the series R-C circuit with a DC voltage source and plot the current passing through the capacitor as a
function of charging time (for 3 given capacitors). Calculate the time constant of one capacitor and compare it
with your experimental result.
Q. Determine the dielectric constants of the three different samples provided to you.
(Given that the capacitance for the standard capacitor SC1 = 55 pf)
Q. Determine the magnetic field along the axis of a circular coil from B(x) vs x and plot (at least 15 readings). Find
the magnetic field at the center of the coil and compare it with the theoretical value.
(The number of turns of the coil are 500 and the diameter is 21 cm, the horizontal component of the earth’smagnetic field is,
3.53 × 10-5 T.)
Q. Using the current-balance setup, measure the force acting on a current carrying loop (L1 = ……mm), as a
function of current passing through the loop, placed in a constant magnetic field. Estimate the value of B using the
slope of F vs I plot.
Q. Obtain the hysteresis loop for the given ferromagnetic rod for the first two quadrants (0 - π) and determine the
retentivity and coercivity of the material from the graph.
-5
(The length of the rod is 0.278 m, and the area of cross-section of the rod is, 1.84 ×10 m2. The horizontal component of
-5
the earth’s magnetic field is 3.53 ×10 T.)
Q. Plot a graph of the B vs. Im correlation of an electro-magnet for coil current ranging from 0 – 3 A (minimum of
six readings). For a fixed sample current of 3 mA, determine the magneto-resistance of a given crystal for a range of
EM current of 0 to 3 A (six readings).
