0 About this manual

0.1 Scope of this document: Combining Detectors with other network devices

When combining a DR Detector with other Detectors or other network devices on NX,
certain basic network configuration rules must be followed.
• This Service Manual lists the basic network configuration rules in section 1.
• It also provides an overview table with the main, service relevant technical data of
the single Detectors in section 2.
• In section 3 several wiring examples are listed, including the related networking
setup.

NOTE:
Combining two or more different Detector types is also called “mixed use”.
“Mixed use” may not be confused with Detector sharing. For a definition of “Detector
sharing” refer to section 1.5.

1 Basic network configuration rules

1.1 Combining Detectors on one NX

Rule #1 All Detectors can be combined with each other with a few exceptions.

In general, the following Detectors can be combined with each other (in brackets:
Original Equipment Manufacturer name and software component name):
• DR 10s / DR 14s (Thales - TRI)
• Pixium 4343R (Thales - TRI)
• Pixium RF4343 FL (Thales - TDI)
• DR 14e / DR 17e / DR 10e (Innolux - IRI)
• DX-D 30 / DX-D 35 (Canon - CDI)
• DX-D 40 / DX-D 45 / DX-D 60 (Vieworks - VDI)
• DX-D 10 / DX- D 20 / DX-D Fixed (Varian/Varex* - VRN)
• XD Detectors** (Vieworks - VDI)

Exception 1: Product management reasons:

Depending on the DR system, certain combinations may be released only. This is
documented in the respective DR system service manual.
Example: Status 04-2021: DR 800 only allows the combination of Pixium RF4343 FL
with DR 10s / DR 14s or XD Detectors***.

Exception 2: Technical reasons:

VDI 4.0 on Windows 7 requires HotFix7.0.096 or later.
For IRI (Innolux) and VRN (Varian) software ≤ VRN 7.5 it is not allowed to install
hotfix higher than HotFix7.0.090, as this can cause network problems. As a result, it
is not possible to combine VDI ≥ 4.0 with IRI or VRN ≤ 7.5 software.
When upgrading VRN to VRN 8.0 this restriction is not applicable anymore.
To make IRI compatible with VDI ≥ 4.0 on Windows 7, a PC replacement to a
Windows 10 PC is required.
*Varian has been renamed to Varex in 2018.
** XD Detectors = XD 10, XD+10, XD 14, XD+14; XD 17, XD+17. They require VDI ≥ 4.0
*** XD Detectors released for DR 800 as of system version 4.0

1.2 Network cabling

Rule #2 Hospital network on on-board ethernet interface, Detectors on separate NICs.

The on-board ethernet interface is

typically used for the connection to the
hospital network.
For connection to a Detector and other
network devices*, separate NICs
(Network Interface Cards) are used.
The following network interfaces are
available:
• PCI Intel PRO/1000 GT network
adapter, delivered until 07-2015.
• PCIe Intel Gigabit CT desktop
adapter, delivered as of 08-2015.
• Intel I210-T1 network adapter,
introduced in 07-2018 as spare
part to solve issues with Varian
Detectors. Can be used for all
other Detectors.
• tp-link TG-3468 network adapter**,
introduced in 08-2023.
• Intel I225-V network adapter, which
is preinstalled in the HP Engage
Flex Pro G2 PC. PC delivered as of
Q2-2024. Figure 3

* Examples for other devices: Generator Sync Box; DR 400 / DR 600 Tube Head; access point.
** Network adapter TG-3468 requires dedicated driver with Document ID 81682517.

In exceptional cases, for example for troubleshooting, the Detector can be

connected to the on-board ethernet interface. This has not been tested for all
Detector combinations however.

NOTE:
For mounting of a NIC see also rules #12, #13 and #14.
Mounting of a NIC in a desktop PC HP rp5810 / HP Engage Flex Pro is described in
a video with Document ID 76358952.

Note that up to 05-2021, before publication of revision 3 of this document, this rule
was more strict: It was mandatory to use a dedicated NIC for Vieworks Detectors.
In the meantime, combining Vieworks with other Detectors, using the NIC fine tuning
for Vieworks, has been successfully tested.

Figure 6

NOTE:
When Canon and Thales are used on one NX, also the Infrared data communication
unit is shared. Refer to wiring shown in section 3.2.

NOTE:
It is not required to share one NIC whenever it is possible.
Refer to example in Figure 7.
• PRO when sharing one NIC: Cost effective
• CON when sharing one NIC: Slower image data transfer possible, if data transfer
rate of other network devices is high.
It is possible to install as many NICs as slots are available in the PC*. In case of
networking problems, it might be needed to install a separate NIC. This will optimize
network performance.
* Example: HP rp5810 and HP Engage Flex Pro: 4 PCI slots

NOTE:
The example shown in Figure 12 assumes, that the subnet mask of all NICs is set to
default (255.255.255.0) for a type C network.
If for example subnet mask 255.255.0.0 is used for the hospital network, use a
subnet calculator to check the host address range, for example
https://www.site24x7.com/tools/ipv4-subnetcalculator.html

In the example of subnet mask 255.255.0.0 for the hospital network: Windows will
consider an IP address like 192.168.1.6 being valid for both destinations, the Pixium
4343 and the device on the hospital network (for example the RIS). This might
disturb network communication.
Therefore, for the three NICs in NX use IP address 192.169... instead of 192.168 ….

Rule #10 Observe the existing IP address range restrictions per Detector

Some Detectors do not support all possible IP addresses.

Examples:
• Innolux Detectors require NIC IP address 192.168.0.10.
As of IRI 3.0 it has been extended to 192.168.YYY.10.
• Pixium 4343 1st generation only supports IP addresses 10.0.37.130 or
10.0.37.132
The supported IP addresses per Detector are listed in section 2, DR Detector
technical data – overview and in the respective DR Detector Service Manual.

Rule #11 Use the suggested IP addresses that are listed in the Detector service manuals

The Detector service manuals list examples for wiring and related component IP
addresses.
Recommendation: Whenever possible, use the IP addresses of the examples. This
makes it easier for other Field Service Engineers to detect the topology of the
network.

1.4 Mounting and exchanging network interfaces

Rule #12 Do not install a PCIe Intel Gigabit CT Desktop adapter in a PCIe x16 slot

A PCIe Intel Gigabit CT Desktop adapter installed in a PCIe x16 slot results in
sporadic network delays or network communication interrupts, which need a power
cycle to recover. For details refer to NX 22.00 SB07 with Document ID 71057541.
Note that this rule does not apply for the Intel I210-T1 network adapter.

Rule #13 Do not install a TG-3468 NIC in a PCIe x4 slot of HP Engage Flex Pro

A TG-3468 network adapter installed in a PCIe x4 slot of HP Engage Flex Pro

results in message “Network cable unplugged”, even if the NIC is installed and
cabled properly.
The HP Engage Flex Pro G2 does not have this restriction.
Workaround: Use any other PCI slot on the motherboard or the PCI riser card.

Rule #14 When exchanging a network adapter, follow a dedicated sequence

The following sequence of steps is derived from the following facts:

1. When installing a network interface in a different PCIe slot, the network settings of
this network interface are reset to default.
2. When replacing a network interface by another type, the following message might
appear when adjusting TCP/IP settings: In order to configure TCP/IP,
you must install and enable a network adapter card. This can be
prevented by uninstalling the NIC driver first.

Sequence of steps when changing a network interface from one to another PCIe
slot:
(1) Take a screenshot of the Windows Network and Sharing Centre and the TCP/IP
network settings of the network interface card.
(2) Power off the PC, remove the PC cover and re-install the network interface card
in a free PCI express x2 or x4 slot on the main board or on a riser card (x1 slot).
(3) Power on the PC.
(4) Perform TCP/IP network settings for the re-installed network interface.

Sequence of steps when changing to another network interface type (for example
replacing PCIe Gigabit CT desktop adapter by Intel I210-T1):
(1) Take a screenshot of the Windows Network and Sharing Centre and the TCP/IP
network settings of the network interface card.
(2) In the Windows device manager right-click on the network adapter and select
Uninstall device.
(3) Power off the PC, remove the PC cover and replace the network interface card.
(4) Power on the PC. The driver for the network interface is automatically installed.
(5) Perform TCP/IP network settings for the re-installed network interface.

1.5 Detector Sharing

Detector sharing means: One Detector is used on two or more different DR systems.
Depending on the Detector type, certain rules must be followed.
Detector sharing setup and operation is described in the respective DR Detector
Service Manual. This section shows an overview of Detector sharing network setup for
all Detector types.

NOTE:
In section 3.3 an example is shown for “Mixed use and Detector sharing of DR 10e
and DR 14s”.

Rule #15 For Detector sharing, for each Detector type, specific basic setup rules for
Detector IP address and Network Interface Card (NIC) must be followed

Detector IP address NIC IP address

DR 10e / DR 14e / DR 17e Identical on all shared systems Identical on all shared systems
(Innolux)
DR 10s / DR 14s (Thales) Identical on all shared systems Identical on all shared systems
DX-D 30 / DX-D 35 / (Canon) No special rules for Detector No special rules for Detector
sharing sharing
DX-D 40 / DX-D 45 / DX-D 60 & Must be in the same subnet No special rules for Detector
XD Detectors* (Vieworks) sharing
*XD Detectors = XD 10, XD+10, XD 14, XD+14; XD 17, XD+17

Two examples how to read this table:

Example 1: Sharing DR 14e on two systems:
• DR 14e must have the same IP address on both systems, for example
192.168.0.171
• The NIC IP address must be the same on both NX. In this example:
192.168.0.10
Example 2: Sharing DX-D 40 on two systems
• DX-D 40 can have on one NX the IP address 169.254.0.40, on the other NX
169.254.1.40
• The NIC IP address can be the same or can be different, for example on one NX
169.254.0.50, on the other NX 169.254.1.50
