bridges, and other man-made

otherwise known as the "living
cultures" like values, beliefs,
customs, traditions, etc.
Culture can be understood in
both deductive and inductive
perspectives:
Cultural Universals refer to
the deductive view of
culture acceptable to all.
Cultural Specifics refer to the

"The human person as a self is a member of the
community imbued with social, economic, political,
moral, intellectual, spiritual and physical values."

specific and arbitrary meaning in a given society. It
is this symbolic communication that sets human

MODES IN ACQUIRING
CULTURE
IMITATION
- replication of the behavior or
culture through modeling and
observation.

Albert Bandura's "Imitation of

Learning" emphasizes modeling any
adult's behavior or culture of a
mature individual to the young.

It is prevalent in the socialization process, whereas the child grows in the environment, he/she
is exposed to different cultural learning experiences.
MODES IN ACQUIRING
CULTURE
INDOCTRINATION
- the process of inculcating ideas,
attitudes, beliefs, and cognitive
strategies during the transfer of
cultural traditions from one
generation to the next with the
expectation that such traditions will
be questioned but practiced in the
future.

Enculturation (acquisition of one's own culture)

Acculturation (when the values and norms outside culture are acquired)
Assimilation (completely gives up own culture and follows the new one)
MODES IN ACQUIRING
CULTURE
CONDITIONING
- behaviorist process of learning
culture through Stimulus- Response
connection (SR) with the use of
rewards.
- process through which we
absorb and interpret the
influences, norms and messaging
from our environment and translate
them into what we believe to be
acceptable behaviors.
NATURE OF SOCIETY
SOCIOUS....
Latin word "socious" means
companionship or friendship
element of sociability or
companionship which defines the
true essence of society (George
Simmel)
Man is a social animal. (Aristotle)

"Society refers not just to a group of

people but to a complex pattern of
norms of interaction that exist among
them."
NATURE OF SOCIETY
SOCIOUS....

The important aspect of society is the

system of relationships, the pattern of
the norms of interaction by which
members of the society maintain
themselves.

Society exists only when members

know each other and possess common
interests in objects.
TYPES OF DEFINITION
Functional - society is defined
as a complex group in
reciprocal relationships,
interacting with one another,
enabling human organisms to
carry on their life- activities,
and helping each person to
fulfill his wishes and
accomplish his interest in
association with his fellows.
TYPES OF DEFINITION

Structural - society is the

total social heritage of
folkways, mores and
institutions; habits,
sentiments and ideals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIETY
Society means likeness.
"Comradeship, intimacy,
association of any kind or
degree would be impossible
without some understanding of
each by the other and that
understanding depends on the
likeness which each apprehends
in the other."
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIETY
Society also implies difference.
"While difference is necessary to
society, difference by itself does not
create society, difference
subordinate to likeness"

As McIver observed, – primary

likeness and secondary difference
create the greatest of all social
institutions-the division of labour.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIETY
Interdependence.
"The Social Organisation
diversifies each work, making each
more dependent on others, so that
by surrendering self-sufficiency he
may receive back thousand fold in
the fullness of life.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIETY
Cooperation.
"Without cooperation no society
can exist. All social institutions
rest on cooperation. The members
of social institutions cooperate
with one another to live happily
and joyfully. Cooperation avoids
mutual destructiveness and results
in an economy. For want of
cooperation, the entire fabric of
society may collapse.
Social institutions are structures and mechanisms that shape social behavior and fulfill essential
societal functions. It explores the major social institutions, including family, education, economy,
government, religion, and healthcare, and their significance in maintaining societal order and
cultural values.
Globalization, the increasing interconnectedness of societies and cultures worldwide, has profound
implications for cultural diversity. This discusses how globalization influences cultural exchange,
hybridization of cultures, and the challenges it poses to preserving cultural heritage and identity.
Culture is not static but undergoes continuous change and adaptation over time. This explores the
processes of cultural change, including innovation, diffusion, and acculturation, highlighting how
societies evolve and adapt in response to internal and external factors.
Subcultures and countercultures are smaller cultural groups within a larger society that have
distinct beliefs, values, and practices. This examines the characteristics of subcultures and
countercultures, their role in expressing identity and resistance, and their relationship with the
dominant culture.
A THOUGHT TO
PONDER
Nadel in his work says it is necessary
to make a distinction between
“Culture” from its companion term
“society.” According to him culture is
the way of life of the people; while a
society is an organised, interacting
aggregate of individuals who follow a
given way of life. In simple terms a
society is composed of people; the way
they behave is their culture. (Nadel, S.F.
2006)
