Tutorial Letter 101/3/2022

Facility Planning and Material Handling

FPM2601

Assignment 1

Department of Industrial Engineering (DIndE)

This tutorial letter contains important information

about your module.

BARCODE
QUESTION 1

1.1 Identify any five organizational departments or functions and elaborate four
useful information points for each of the functions that would be of interest to a
manufacturing facilities designer. (20)

1.2 Differentiate types of manufacturing facilities design projects and provide two
substantiative examples for each project type. (10)
[30]

QUESTION 2

2.1 A plastic thermoforming plant will be built to produce 6.5 million parts per year.
The plant will run two 9-hour shifts per day, five days per week, 56 weeks per
year. For planning purposes, the average batch size = 1,860 thermoformed
parts, average changeover time between batches = 0.9 hours, and average
thermoforming cycle time per part = 96 sec. Production workers perform both
setups and production runs. Assume scrap rate = 8%, and average uptime
proportion (reliability) per thermoforming machine = 85 %, which applies to both
run time and changeover time. The number of production workers in the plant
each shift is equal to the number of machines. In addition to production
workers, supervisors and material handling workers add 12% more personnel
each shift. Each thermoforming machine requires a floor space 4.572 metres
wide by 5.486 metres long. Additional space requirements in the facility include
(1) aisle space allowance of 18% must be added to the total area required for
machines, (2) storage for raw materials and finished parts of 609.6 square
metres, (3) rest rooms and locker space, for which 3.048 square metres is
allowed per employee in the plant, (4) office space of 152.4 square metres, and
(5) utility space of 76.2 square metres.

2.1.1 Calculate the total area of the thermoforming plant, not counting the area
taken up by walls. (22)

Part No. 1 2 3 4
1 1 1 1
2 1 1
3 1 1 1
4 1
5 1 1

3.1.1 Use direct clustering algorithm to form cells. (10)

3.1.2 Use direct clustering algorithm to resolve any assignment conflicts. (10)
[20]

QUESTION 4

4.1 A toy company produces four different products that are processed in four
distinct departments labelled A, B, C, and D. The below table indicates the
processing information for the respective products.

4.1.1 Develop a from-to-chart for the four products. (16)

4.1.2 Calculate the efficiency of the workflow. (4)
