READING
7 Read the text and match sentences A–F to gaps 1–5 in the text. There is one extra sentence.
How to get work experience
For many young people, finding a job without having any experience is a great challenge. Here are three ways
young people in the UK can solve this problem.
Unpaid work
To some, this may look like a very bad option, but there are many benefits. For example, if a young person
wants to work in social media, they could try offering their services to a local company. They will get valuable
experience, their CV will look better and they will make contacts in the industry. 1 __________
An apprenticeship
2 __________ It allows people to be trained in skills relating to a particular area of work. Apprenticeships can
be done in many different industries, but apprentices will have to be at least sixteen years old and no longer in
full-time education. 3 __________ Although the pay is low, they may get a job when they finish if they work
hard.
A part-time job
In most cases, a part-time job is better paid per hour than an apprenticeship. 4 __________ Young people
probably won’t work in the area they are thinking about specialising in. However, they will learn some valuable
soft skills, such as critical thinking and time management. These are personal qualities and abilities that you
need to succeed in many jobs, and employers often ask for them. 5 __________
A The work is often repetitive and boring, however, and the pay is usually low.
B On the other hand, it may only be for a few hours a week.
C They spend at least 20 per cent of their time training for the role.
D Working as a waiter in a restaurant, for instance, you will develop many such abilities including verbal
communication, problem-solving and maths.
E Moreover, if they impress the boss, they may be offered a full-time position upon finishing their studies.
F In the UK, this is a paid, full-time position between one and five years in length.
