PHET SIMULATOR FORCES AND MOVEMENT: INTRO

By entering this link: https://phet.colorado.edu/es/simulations/forces-and-motion-basics

You’ll see this screen:

Use the button:

A screen will open. You must select

the second option starting from the left.

For all exercises you have to have activated the buttons at the top right:

These values should appear to you.

They are velocity (speed) and mass

To familiarize yourself with the simulator, try to apply forces, add more objects, etc. You need a stopwatch. You can
use the one on your mobile or your watch and if you do not have look for one online. When you think you can start,
prepare your stopwatch and move on:

Exercise 1:

Apply the different forces and time how long it takes to reach the maximum speed.

Complete this table

Time(s)
Applied force (N) reaching 40 m/s
Box 50 kilos
+ 200
+ 300
+ 400

Exercise 2:
Now let's stop it. The first thing you have to do is get the maximum speed.
Then you will apply the force to slow it down and calculate the time needed to stop it.
Complete this table.
Time(s)
Applied force (N)
reaching 0 m/s
- 200
- 300
- 400

Exercise 3:
Now let's change the mass. Put the other box so that they are in total 100 kilos.
Apply the different forces and time how long it takes to reach the maximum speed
Complete this table. Use the data you can from exercise 1.
Time(s) Time(s)
Applied force (N) reaching 40 m/s reaching 40 m/s
Box 50 kilos Box 100 kilos
+ 200
+ 300
+ 400

Exercise 4:

Now put only the gift box of which the mass is unknown.

Would you be able to give a value for its

mass?

Now let's use the simulator with

FRICTION
To get started, familiarize yourself with the new possibilities. Try varying the friction and speeding up the box.

What do you observe?

Exercise 5:

It applies the different forces and times how long it takes to reach the maximum speed.

Complete this table, use the data you can from previous exercises.

Time(s) Time(s) Time(s)

reaching 40 m/s reaching 40 m/s reaching 40 m/s
Applied force (N)
Box of 50 kilos Box of 50 kilos Box of 50 kilos
NO FRICTION MEDIUM FRICTION MAXIMUM FRICTION
+ 200
+ 300
+ 400

Finally, let's look at the Acceleration module

To get started, familiarize yourself with the new possibilities. Activate the new buttons: it will measure the
acceleration.

Exercise 6:
It applies the different forces and indicates the acceleration in each case.
Complete this table, if you can, use the data from previous exercises.
Acceleration (m/s 2) Acceleration (m/s 2) Acceleration (m/s 2) Acceleration (m/s 2)
Applied force (N) Box of 50 kilos Box of 50 kilos Box of 100 kilos Box of 100 kilos
