Summer 2024
Homework 4

You have four problems to work, and you need to submit your solutions as one PDF file.
It is possible that not all parts of the problems will be graded.

Each answer must be justified and all your work should appear. You will be
marked on the quality of your explanations.

You can discuss the problems with classmates, but you should write your solutions sepa-
rately (meaning that you cannot copy the same solution from a joint blackboard, for exam-
ple).

Your work should be submitted on Moodle, before Wednesday, August 7, at 11:59 pm.

1. (15 points) Recall that f (x) = x is continuous over [0, +∞).

(a) Show that f (x) = x is uniformly continuous over [1, +∞).

(b) Show that f (x) = x is uniformly continuous over [0, 1].
(c) Show that a function that is uniformly continuous over [a, b] and [b, +∞) is uni-
formly continuous over [a, +∞).
√ √
(d) Prove that if {an }n∈N → L where an ≥ 0 for all n, then { an }n∈N → L.
x sin( x1 ) if x ̸= 0

2. Show that f (x) = is continuous everywhere on R.
0 if x = 0
3. Show that f (x) = x4 − 3x2 + 1 has two roots in [0, 2].
4. (15 points) Consider the function f (x) = ex . We want to show that f ′ (x) = ex . Here
is what you can use for this problem:
ˆ Everything we proved about the derivative and limits.
ˆ The following definition for the exponential function:

x
X xn
e = .
n=0
n!

ˆ Common exponentiation rules, such as ea+b = ea · eb .

ˆ e0 = 1.

(a) Show that f ′ (0) = 1.

ex −1
(b) Find limx→0 x
and prove your answer.
(c) Using the definition of the derivative, show that f ′ (x) = ex .

Problems not to be submitted
1. What is limx→0 cos( x1 )? Prove your answer.

2. Prove the following derivative properties:

ˆ (f + g)′ (x) = f ′ (x) + g ′ (x)

ˆ (f · g)′ (x) = f (x) · g ′ (x) + f ′ (x) · g(x)

3. Show that x = cos(x) has a solution in (0, π2 ). Does x = sin(x) has a solution in (0, π2 )?

4. Give examples of functions f and g such that neither function has a limit at c, but
f + g does. Do the same for f · g.

5. Show that f (x) = 1 + x2 is continuous on R. Hint: Use what you know about
combining continuous functions to avoid an ϵ − δ proof.

6. Find limx→c f (x), and justify your answers with an ϵ–δ proof.
x3 −8
(a) x−2

x3 −1
(b) (x−1)(x−2)
