MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

3 topics and construct your own problem

1 for Age Word Problem

1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

1 Mixture Problem

Age Word Problem

John is now 20 years old than his son. In 10 years he will be twice as old as his son age. What are their
present age.

Present Future

(in 10 years )

John X+20 X+20+10

X+30

Son X X+10

First let john current age be x+20 then son is x. In 10 years John age will be x+30 and his son is x+10. So
the problem say that is in 10 years John will be twice as old as his son.

X+30 = 2(x+10)

X+30 = 2x+20

X-2x = 20-30

-x =-10

-x =-1

X=10 this is the age of his son

X+20=10 +20=30 this is the the age of John

The answer will add 10 because the statement say in ten years

30+10 =40 john age

10 +10=20 son age

To get thier present age i made a diagram, because their present age is unknown i put(x). To get their
present age i put in John is x+20 and in his son is 2(x+10), i put 2 in there because it said John is twice as
old as his son,then i solve it then get X+30 = 2x+10 and simplify then it become x-2x = 20-30 then the
answer is 10=x, so John present age is 40 and his son is 20.

Distance, Rate and Time Problem

A car travels from city A to city B, a distance of 160 miles. If the car travels at a speed of 40 miles per
hour. How long will it take to travel this distance? If it returns at a speed of 80 miles per hour how much
total time does the round trip take.

First, calculate the time travel from city A to city B

Time= distance/speed

Time= 160 miles /40 mph

Time= 4 hours

Next, Calculate the time for the return trip

Time= 160 miles /80 mph

Time=2 hours

Now find the total for the round trip

Total time = 4hours +2 hour= 6 hours

Final answer

The total time for the round trip is 6 hours

Mixture Problem

A 3 liters solution that was 6% soysauce was mixed with a 12 liters solution that was 73% soysauce. Find
the new concentration of soysauce?

(6%)(3L)+(73%)(12L)=(x)(15L)

(6)(3)+(73)(12) =15x

18+876=15x

891 = 15x

15 15

59.4=x

or

59.4%=x

So the problem is to find the new concentration of the soysausage so the format is (6%)(3L)+(73%)
(12L)=(x)(15L), the new concentration is unknown so i put (x) and the 15L is the sum of 3L and 12L. Then
i simplify and solve the problem and the (x) is 59.4%.The concentration of the 15L soysauce is 59.4%

After answering your own formulated problems. The following questions should be answered.

1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: I researched in the internet and also watched some examples of the following word problems
so that I have guides on how to create my own word problem.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics mentioned?
Answer: I checked and compared it with other word problems in the internet as well as YouTube and it
was the same and also related to the three topics mentioned.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon constructing the problem?

Answer: It was quite challenging for me to construct a word problem because I need to think beyond
and to align the given numbers accordingly.

4. How did you arrive at your answers.

Answer: After I constructed my word problems each topics have its own equation and I use the equation
and got the answers of the following topics. Also I watched on YouTube for a detailed solution so that I
can understand well on how to solve the problems.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed problems.

Answer: First, I identified the following given numbers in the word problem.

Second, I searched online for the possible equations to be used for each topics.

Third, I used the equation and watched YouTube to have a guide in answering the word

problem.

Lastly, I solved the following numbers to get the answers.
