I. OBJECTIVES

a. Demonstrates understanding of decimals.


b. Work cooperatively in a group.
c. Recognize and represents decimals in various forms and texts.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Gives the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number through ten
thousandths. M5NS – IIa.101.2

C. Materials: Cards, place value chart. worksheets
D. Strategies: Cooperative learning, Interactive learning, chalk and talk

E. Value Focus: Working cooperatively in a group, Awareness, alertness, and cooperation.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preliminary Activities

1.Drill

Have a game where the teacher will group the students into two groups. Each group should
have seven representatives to stand in front and will be given jumbled letters. The rest of the
group will arrange their classmates based on the letter that they are holding.

Directions: Arrange the jumbled letters to form a word to answer the question from the box.

2. Review

Game: Find me!

Have a game on finding the place value of a number from ones to ten thousandths where
students will form a line that will corresponds to their answer.

Mechanics:
a. Flash the cards with numbers.
b. The pupils will form a line to the place value that corresponds their answer.
c. The more correct answers they get, the more points they will have.

Directions: Give the place value of the underlined digit.

B. Motivation

Show a picture of a gold. Ask the pupils to tell something about the picture.

Ask : What is a heat conductor (materials that allow heat to pass through)? Give examples of heat
conductors.

C. Presentation

Present this to class.

Gold is a metallic chemical element. It has an atomic number of 79 and


an atomic mass of 196.967.

Have the pupils read the sentence. Then ask: What is gold? What is the atomic number of gold? What is
the atomic mass of gold?
Before proceeding the teacher will show the class a place value chart of decimal number.

Study the place value chart of decimal numbers below.

Ask: What kind of number is 196.967?

Call a volunteer student to put 196.967 in the Place Value Chart for Decimals.

 Therefore, the place value is the position of a digit in the place value chart.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

Performing the activities.

Raul and Joey love studying. Even though their houses are far from their school, they still attend their
classes every day. The distance of Raul's house to school is 2 kilometers while Joey's house is 2.25
kilometers away.

Each digit in a number has a position or place, and this place has a name. The illustration below
shows you the name of each position of a number.

Rules for Decimal Place Values

 The first digit to the left of decimal point is in the ones place.The second digit to the left of
decimal point is in the tens place.
 The third digit to the left of decimal point is in the hundreds place and so on.
 The first digit to the right of decimal point is in the tenths place.
 The second digit to the right of decimal point is in the hundredths place.
 The third digit to the right of decimal point is in the thousandths place.
 The fourth digit to the right of decimal point is in the ten thousandths place and so on.
