2 (Time Response)
I. Introduction
II. Objectives
III. Procedure/Problems Using MATLAB
1. Evaluate the time response specification and plot the step response given the transfer function
𝑎
𝐺(𝑠) =
𝑠+𝑎
for the following values of a: 2, 4, 6, and 9.
2. Given the transfer function with step input
𝑏
𝐺(𝑠) = 2
𝑠 + 𝑎𝑠 + 𝑏
a. Evaluate percent overshoot, settling time, peak time, and rise time for the following values: a =
4; b = 25. Plot output response.
b. Calculate the values of a and b so that the imaginary part of the poles remains the same but the
real part is increased two times over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
c. Calculate the values of a and b so that the imaginary part of the poles remains the same but the
real part is decreased by one half over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
d. Calculate the values of a and b so that the real part of the poles remains the same but the
imaginary part is increased two times over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
e. Calculate the values of a and b so that the real part of the poles remains the same but the
imaginary part is increased four times over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
f. Calculate the values of a and b so that the damping ratio remains the same but the natural
frequency is increased two times over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
g. Calculate the values of a and b so that the damping ratio remains the same but the natural
frequency is increased four times over that of step 2a, and repeat 2a.
a. Evaluate the percent overshoot, settling time, peak time, and rise time. Plot the step response.
b. Add a pole at −200 to the system of step 3a. Estimate whether the transient response in 3a will
be appreciably affected.
c. Repeat step 3b with the pole successively placed at −20; −10, and −2.
4. Plot the step response and determine the specification for the given transfer function
𝑏
𝐺(𝑠) = 2
𝑠 + 𝑎𝑠 + 𝑏
a. 𝑎 = 4 and 𝑏 = 4
b. 𝑎 = 8 and 𝑏 = 16
c. 𝑎 = 10 and 𝑏 = 25
5. Plot the step response for the given transfer function
𝑏
𝐺(𝑠) = 2
𝑠 +𝑏
a. 𝑏 = 4
b. 𝑏 = 16
c. 𝑏 = 36
d. 𝑏 = 64
e. 𝑏 = 81
IV. Discussion
1. Describe the effects on the time response specification as the poles are changed
2. Discuss the effects of pole location upon the time response for both first- and second order
systems.
3. Discuss any discrepancies between your calculated and experimental values.
4. Discuss the effect of 𝑎 and 𝑏 variation in item 𝐼𝐼𝐼. 4
5. Discuss the effect of 𝑏 variation in item 𝐼𝐼𝐼. 5
