Definition
An infinite series is the sum of an infinite sequence of numbers

a1 + a2 + a3 + ... + an + ...

We look at the result of summing just the first n terms of the sequence.

sn = a1 + a2 + a3 + ... + an

It is called the nth partial sum.

Geometric Series

a + ar + ar + ... + ar n−1
+ ... = ∑ ar n−1

n=1

3 scenarios:

1. r > 0
2. r = 0
3. r < 0

🏀 EXAMPLE 3 (Understand the Basic Idea)

You drop a ball from a meters above a flat surface. Each time the
ball
hits the surface after falling a distance
h, it rebounds a distance rh, where r is positive but less than 1.
Find the total distance the ball travels up and down

The nth-Term Test for a Divergent Series

One reason that a series may fail to converge is that its terms don’t become
small.
