4.

1Constructing and Solving Equations

" Steps for Solving Linear Equations:
1. Simplify both sides of the equation.
2. Combine like terms.

3. Isolate the variable on one side.

Examples:
Solve 2a 6 = 10:

2 = 10+6
2 = 16
16
2
T= 8

Solve 5y +3=9+ 2y:

5y-2y=9-3
3y = 6
6
3
y = 22
4.2 Simultaneous Equations
Method of Substitution:

1 Solve one equation for one variable.

2. Substitute this expression into the other equation.

3. Solve for the remaining variable.
Method of Elimination:

1. Add or subtract the equations to eliminate one variable.

2. Solve the resulting equation for the remaining variable.
Example: Solve y=2æ l and y= +5:
Substitution:
2æ - 1=+5
z=6
Substitute z = 6into y = 2a - 1:

y= 2(6) 1=11
Solution: z = 6, y =11
4.3 Inequalities
" Key Rules:

1. When multiplying or dividing by anegative numbe, reverse the inequality un

2. Represent solutionson a number line.
" Example: Solve 4r 5 15:

4 < 20)
