UEC 2603 Microwave and Antenna Engineering – Assignment II

2023-24

Important points:
1. Enter the details of the selected paper in the following link by Monday, April 8:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q0lv-
k_cpGbCV55ceh18i3Z5puJ4QzseKtH1FtGTnxg/edit?usp=sharing

Please see that no two teams select the same paper.

2. Cover Sheet Submission deadline: Thursday, May 2. The poster must have been ready
by this date.
3. Poster display and evaluation will be scheduled early May

Task description:

Select a tutorial/design paper related to antennas or microwave components published since 2019 in
one of the following journals:

 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine

 IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation
 IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques
 IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters
 IEEE Microwave Magazine
 IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters

Study and understand the paper as thoroughly as possible, referring to further resources as needed.
Prepare a poster of size 3 ft by 4 ft in landscape layout, that summarizes the paper's key findings,
methodology, and major contributions. Additionally, it should highlight the potential implications of the
work for better understanding/further advancements or applications in the domain. The poster title
should be short and appropriate to the contents - please do not simply use the paper title.

You may consult the following link – there are many others as well - to understand how to prepare
an effective poster:

Poster title:

Flexible Miniaturized Antenna for Injectable Implant

Primary reference: Y. Sui et al., "A Tissue-Independent Flexible Antenna With Miniaturized
Size for Injectable Implants," in IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, vol. 23, no. 3,
pp. 945-949, March 2024, doi: 10.1109/LAWP.2023.3339781.

Summary of the paper (in your own writing, 100 words):

The paper introduces a new implantable tissue independent antenna designed to operate in the
ISM 2.4-2.4835 GHz band for muscle and fat tissues. The antenna design includes an
unsymmetric dipole, a rectangular ground plane and a side-fed radiator, comprising two arms of
different lengths to achieve different resonances in fat and muscle tissues. The antenna's
performance was evaluated using body phantoms simulating skin, fat, and muscle, showing
resonance differences in muscle and fat tissues. Different depths of implantation were considered,
demonstrating coverage of the ISM band in both slim and obese body phantoms. The proposed
antenna showcased good flexibility, frequency robustness, and the ability to overcome size
limitations and frequency detuning, making it suitable for injectable, minimally invasive
implantable devices.
Declaration:
We declare that we have prepared the poster in accordance with good academic conduct. It is
a result of our own efforts, and all the team members have more or less equally contributed.
We understand that we will have to be present during the poster evaluation and answer oral
questions from the assessors and other visitors.
