ABSTRACT:

In this lab experiment, the main objectives were to understand how a diode functions in an
electrical circuit and to draw its characteristic curves. Diode characteristic curves illustrate the
relationship between current flow and applied voltage. We explored forward and reverse bias
conditions, noting that conduction in silicon diodes typically starts around 0.5 to 0.7 volts, while
for germanium diodes, it's about 0.3 volts. We observed that once conduction begins, small
voltage increases lead to significant current jumps. Additionally, we learned about forward
voltage drop, leakage current in reverse-biased diodes, and the importance of preventing damage
by limiting the maximum forward current. Through practical steps involving diode testing and
circuit connections, we gained insights into the fundamental properties and behaviors of diodes
in electronic circuits.

Introduction:

In this lab, we're exploring diodes, which are tiny electronic components that control the flow of
electricity in circuits. We'll learn how they work by studying characteristic curves, which show
how current changes with voltage. By setting up experiments with diodes and measuring
equipment, we'll see how diodes behave when they're connected in different ways.
Understanding diodes is crucial for designing and troubleshooting electronic devices

Procedure
1.Gather the required equipment - diodes, resistors, multimeter, and oscilloscope.

2. Set the multimeter to the Ohms scale. Check the diode's impedance in reverse bias using the
setup shown in Figure 9.1. Note the meter reading.

3. Analyze the meter reading to determine if the diode is forward or reverse biased. Reverse the
meter probes to confirm conductivity.
4. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 2.2. Set VA to -10.00 VDC.

5. Disconnect Diode D1. Set VA to -20 Vdc. Record the current through R2 and the voltage
across Diode D2. Complete Table 2.1 by adjusting VA and recording corresponding current and
voltage values.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for different voltage settings to gather sufficient data points.

7. Plot the collected data points to draw the characteristic curves of the diode. Analyze the
behavior of the diode under different voltage conditions.

8. Summarize the findings and observations from the experiment, relating them to the objectives
of the lab. Discuss any insights gained into the behavior of diodes in electronic circuits.

Discussion:
In this experiment, we learned a lot about how diodes work in circuits. When we connected them
in different ways and measured the current and voltage, we saw how they behaved. We found out
that diodes let electricity flow more easily in one direction than the other. This is important
because it helps control the flow of electricity in devices like computers and phones. We also
learned about things like forward voltage drop and leakage current, which affect how diodes
work. Overall, this experiment helped us understand the role of diodes in electronics and how
they can be used to make circuits work properly.

Conclusion:
Through this experiment, we gained valuable insights into the behavior of diodes in electrical
circuits. By observing characteristic curves and conducting practical tests, we deepened our
understanding of how diodes control the flow of electricity. We found that diodes allow current
to pass more easily in one direction than the other, which is essential for many electronic devices
to function correctly. Additionally, we learned about factors such as forward voltage drop and
leakage current, which impact the performance of diodes.
