SHORT CIRCUIT ANALYSIS

The impact of short circuits varies depending on the transformer tapping configurations.

Tappings are significant in transformers as they allow for adjustments to the LV side
bus voltage during load flow analysis, whether through OLTC or DETC mechanisms, to
increase or decrease voltage. However, when considering short circuit scenarios, it's crucial to
determine the appropriate short circuit ratings for the buses. In cases where tappings are
applied, the short circuit current may vary depending on the tapping used.

Nominal tap:

Under the nominal tap setting, the transformer

impedance remains constant, unaffected by tapping
adjustments. Short circuit levels at the bus voltage are
determined solely based on the transformer impedance. Taps do
not influence this calculation.

+2.5 Tap position:

When using a +2.5 tap setting, the transformer's

impedance is reduced by adjusting the tap position from 0
to 2.5. As a result, the short circuit current is increased
compared to the nominal tap setting.

-2.5 Tap position:

When using a -2.5 tap setting, the

transformer's impedance is increased by adjusting
the tap position from 0 to -2.5. As a result, the short
circuit current is decreased compared to the nominal
tap setting.
