School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Strength of Materials II (MEng3111) – Assignment on Statically Indeterminate Structures
1) A propped cantilever beam AB shown in figure 1 is of length L and supports a uniform
load of intensity q. Determine all the support reactions.
Figure 1. Propped Cantilever Beam
2) A fixed-end beam AB of length L, shown in figure 2, supports a triangularly distributed load of maximum intensity q0. Using method of integration obtain the reactions of the beam at the supports.
Figure 2. Fixed-end Beam
3) A two-span continuous beam ABC supports a uniform load of intensity q, as shown in Figure 3. Each span of the beam has length L. Using the method of superposition, determine all reactions for this beam.
Figure 3. Continuous Beam
4) A circular shaft AB consists of a 25.4 cm long, 2.2225 cm diameter steel cylinder, in which a 12.7 cm long, 1.5875 cm diameter cavity has been drilled from end B. The shaft is attached to fixed supports at both ends, and a 122Nm torque is applied at its mid-section as shown in figure 4. Determine the torque exerted on the shaft by each of the supports.

5) The Steel rod shown in figure 5 has diameter of 5mm. Attached to fixed wall at A, and before it is loaded, there is a gap between the wall at B’ and the rod of 1mm. Determine reactions at A and B’ if rod is subjected to axial force of P = 20kN. Neglect size of collar at C. Take Est = 200GPa
