CLIENT SERVER/PEER-TO-PEER NETWORK

Client Server: the medium through which clients access resources and services
from a central computer via LAN or WAN, such as internet.
e.g., web servers, web browsers

Peer to Peer: a type of network in which each participant (or peer) can act as both a
client and server allowing them to share resources.

ADVANTAGES OF CLIENT/ SERVER NETWORK

1. Users can log on at any client computer. data files, printers, software
available anywhere.
2. Network operations can be handled centrally at the server. Back up, software
updates, anti-virus. No need for user to be involved
3. Security handled centrally. In a structured manner. Secured data. Audit logs
kept.

DISADVANTAGES OF CLIENT/ SERVER

NETWORK

1. Cost: server computers are powerful and expensive. Network hardware

required (hubs, switches, routers). Technician support essential for
maintenance
2. Reliable on server and network infrastructure: if server fails, then centrally
held data becomes unavailable
3. Speed of operation: more users slower access to resources
