ACE too high and the connection to public health (strategy and prevention)

*Review the questions on the first page https://acestoohigh.com/got-your-ace-score/

1. After reviewing the 10 question ACE score, what questions would you add to the
questionnaire? What would be your rationale? Minimum 10 sentence requirement. (no
self-disclosure).
2.
One question that I would add would have to do with question 7. “Was your mother or
stepmother...” I think a follow up question should be was your grandfather or father ever abused,
hit, etc. I can absolutely understand why the question is only referring to mothers and
grandmothers. But it is 2024, and women can be just as violent as men, and woman/female abuse
is a real thing. So, I would add the question “Do you have a grandfather or father, or parent...”
Another question that I would add to the ACE questionnaire is “Are there new people frequently
coming in and out of your household? (such as the parent’s new relationships)” In certain cases,
children dealing with trauma must deal with their parent going through multiple relationships.
Depending on the person, and what they're into, that can deeply affect that child’s childhood and
experiences growing up (in terms of all types of abuse, taunting, mistreatment, a multitude of
factors.)

Part II
1. Please list the six prevention strategies along with one approach (see page 11) and
summarize (in your own words) each one. Minimum 7 sentences each.
• Prevention strategy one and list one approach
o Strengthen economic support to families. This prevention strategy is supposed to
support family's health needs, their wellbeing, and financial household security
for families. This allows for a more stress-free environment, where families do
not have the added pressure of dwelling finances. This strategy focuses on
building affordable healthcare and basic needs for all families and households.
• Prevention strategy two and list one approach
o Promote social norms that protect against violence and adversity. This strategy
strives to work to break stigmas and societal norms that may be bringing harm to
children and families. This also works to promote those who have the voice or the
right to speak out against violence or child harm. That way, more people can be
aware and know what to look out for. Overall, this is creating a safer and healthier
environment to prevent ACE.
• Prevention strategy three and list one approach
o Ensure a strong start for children. This strategy calls to ensure that starting from a
young age the child and home are being visited and observed to prevent abuse and
lack of care. It all starts at home, and if we can notice early signs, it all leads to
prevention. This could include resources such as: parent-teacher conferences,
parental classroom visits, and just making sure that the child is in the best place it
can be to learn and grow.
• Prevention strategy four and list one approach
o Teaching skills. This goes from social skills to healthy and safe dating skills,
along with families' skills. Once you teach a child the right way to treat people,
and how they should expect to be treated. That creates a strong person, who will
not allow for abuse or trauma, etc. Teaching skills can also stop the cycle of a
toxic/harmful family/relationship.
• Prevention strategy five and list one approach
o Connect youth to caring adults and activities. Now a days there are many after
school activities and programs for students and children to get involved into. This
way the child can get an understanding of an appropriate child and adult
relationship. During that time, they can also build lifelong skills about personal
growth or through certain or tough situations going on in that child's life.
• Prevention strategy six and list one approach
o Intervene to lessen immediate and long-term harms. This consists of specified
treatment for substance abuse and violence in the home. Overall, a greater
emphasis on enhanced care and services. The more that children are being
observed, the more that these professionals can intervene during an important
time, and they can notice the signs of abuse etc... and take the child out of that
situation or get them the help that they need.
1. Which strategy do you think your own community lacks. Please elaborate. 5 sentence
minimum.
I think my community lacks Promote social norms that protect against violence and adversity. I
live in a small town, where social norms are not broken or talked about. Many people in this
area, especially men and boys would not tend to speak out against something, unless it was
personally affecting their life. Also, since we are a small town, we tend to be a bit more
traditional.
2. Which strategy do you think your own community thrives? Please elaborate. 5 sentence
minimum.
I believe that my community thrives in connecting youth to caring adults and activities. The good
thing about living in such a small town is that we really pride ourselves in our sense of
community. So, luckily there are many after school programs, preschool programs, sports
programs for toddlers- young children to join. That is amazing, because it ensures that kids have
an outlet or places to relax, meet their community, and find a voice. (even if they are toddlers
and young in age)
