f(x+2) = 2x+3

o f(x) =-(𝒙 + 𝟏)𝟐+1
f(x) =-((𝑥 + 2) + 1)2 +1

3) Describe the graphical relation between f(x), f(x+2), and f(x−1).

That when we add or subtract a constant inside function’s argument, f(x+c)
that causes horizontal shifting of the graph:

o f(x+2): when 2 add to x so it will move the graph 2 units left.

o f(x-1): when 1 subtract from x so the graph will move 1 unit right.

By the end the shifting of f(x) to create f(x+c) result to move the left when the
“c” is positive. Move right when “c” is negative.

4) Describe the graphical relation between f(x) and f(x+c), where c is a constant and
c∈R.

There is a general effect for adding a “c” constant to the input of f(x):
o If c<0 then the shifting of f(x+c) will be to the left according by “c” units.
o If c>0 then the shifting of f(x+c) will be to the right according to the “c”
units.

This horizontal shifting happens due to the changing of x to x+c this means each value associated
to an input to be moved by “c”.

5) Given that a vertex of a function f(x) is (p, k), write down the vertex of f(x+c) and
justify your answer.

o If the original vertex of f(x) is (p, k) so when the function is shifted

horizontally by c to get f(x+c) so the vertex moves as (p-c, k)
o That when c adds it to x so the graph starts shifting horizontally by –c units so
the x coordinate of the vertex changes from p to p-cp
o But the y coordinate still remains the same =k because the horizontal shifting
didn’t affect on the vertical position or line.

o So the vertex at (p, k) in f(x) then the vertex of f(x+c) become to (p-c, k).

6) Determine 1/2f(x) and 3f(x) of each of the following:

a) y= (x-1) (x+2) (x-3)

y= [ 𝑥 3 +2𝑥 2 -𝑥 2 -3𝑥 2 -2x-6x+3x+6]

y= [ 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 -5x+6]

o 3f(x)
y= [ 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 -5x+6]
y= 3[ 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 -5x+6]
y= 3𝑥 3 -6𝑥 2 -15x+18
o ½ f(x)
y= [ 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 -5x+6]
y= 1/2[ 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 -5x+6]
y= 1/2𝑥 3 -𝑥 2 -5/2x+3
b) y= 𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3

o 3f(x)
y= [𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3]
y= 3[𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3]
y= 3𝑥 3 -12𝑥 2 +3x+9
o ½ f(x)
y= [𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3]
y= ½ [𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3]
1
y= 𝑥 3 -2𝑥 2 + ½ x+3/2
2

c) y= sin 𝑥

o 3f(x)
y= sin x

7|Page
y= 3 (sin x)
y= 3 sin x
o ½ f(x)
y= sin x
y= ½ (sin x)
d) y= cos x

o 3f(x)
y= cos x
y= 3 (cos x)
y= 3 cos x
o ½ f(x)
y= cos x
y= ½ (cos x)
y= ½ cos x

7) Graphing:

a. y= (x-1) (x+2) (x-3)

8|Page
b. y= 𝑥 3 -4𝑥 2 +x+3

c. y= sin 𝑥

d. y= cos x

8) describe the graphical relation between f(x), 3f(x), ½ f(x)

that when you multiply function f(x) by a constant the graph of the function undergoes o vertical
scaling:
o For the function 3f(x) this function is scaled vertically by 3 that’s means it stretches the graph
away from the x-axis that all the y values will be three times higher than in f(x).

9|Page
o For the function ½ f(x)) this function is scaled vertically by ½ that’s means it compresses the
graph toward x-axis that all the y values will be half of the original f(x).
o 3f(x) stretches the graph vertically
o 1/2f(x) compresses the graph vertically

9) Describe the graphical relation between f(x) and af(x) where “a” is a
constant, a∈R

The value of a determines the vertically scaling:

o If a<1 , the af(x) will stretch the graph of f(x) vertically bf factor a that makes the peaks
and valleys more pronounced.

o If 0>a> 1, af(x) will compress the graph of f(x) that vertically, then it brings it closer to
the x-axis.

o If a=1 so af(x) = f(x) then the graph remains unchanged

o If a=0 so af(x)=0 then the graph will become a liner function (horizontal line on the x-
axis)

o If a>0 then the function af(x) will flip the f(x) function or reflected across the x-axis and
scale it by the absolute value of a that if a<1 will stretch the function vertically but if
0>a> 1 it will compress.

o Finally, a determines the direction and the degree of the vertical scaling that with positive
values maintaining the orientation of f(x) and negative value flipping it across the x-axis.

10) Given that the vertex of a function f(x) is (p,k), write down the vertex of
af(x) and justify your answer.

if the vertex of the function f(x) is (p,k) then the vertex of the function af(x) will be (p,a*k)

justification: actually the vertex x-coordinate (p) is not affected by the vertically scalling but
only affects on the y values. In addition, the y coordinate (k) will be scaled by (a) that make it
(a*k). therefore, the vertex of af(x) is (p,a*k)
