Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE)

Assignment #1
Trimester: Spring, Year: 2024
Course: EEE 2201/ EEE 203 (Sec – A), Energy Conversion-I
Submission deadline: 13th May
Q1. A 420-V, four-pole, 60-hp, 50-Hz, ∆ connected, three-phase induction motor develops its full-load
induced torque at 2.6 percent slip when operating at 50 Hz and 420V. The per-phase circuit model
impedances of the motor are as follows.
Stator Resistance, R2=0.08 Ω, Stator Reactance, X1 = 0.34 Ω, XM= 20.2 Ω
Rotor Reactance (referred to stator), X2 = 0.40 Ω
Mechanical, core, and stray losses is 1000W in this problem.
(i) Find the rotor resistance, R1
(ii) Find the value of slip at which maximum torque occurs for this motor.
Q2. A wound-rotor induction motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency with its slip
rings shorted and with a load of about 50 percent of the rated value for the machine. If
the rotor resistance of this machine is increased by 300% inserting external resistors into the
rotor circuit, explain what happens to the following:
(i) Slip s
(ii) Motor speed in rpm
(iii) The induced voltage in the rotor
(iv) The rotor current
(v) τind.
(vi) PoutI
(vii) Overall efficiency
Q3. A 3-phase induction motor has a starting torque of 100% and a maximum torque of 200%
of the full-load torque.
Find:
(a) slip at maximum torque,
(b) full-load slip, and
(c) rotor current at starting in percent of full-load rotor current.
Neglect the stator impedance.
Q4. The main and auxiliary windings of a hypothetical 240V, 50Hz, capacitor-start single phase induction
motor have the following locked-rotor parameters:
Rmw = 2.50 Ω, Xmw = 3.50 Ω , Raw = 9.5 Ω and Xaw = 8.5 Ω
Determine the followings:
(i) Locked-rotor torque in terms of the machine constant.
(ii) Capacitance required in series with the auxiliary winding in order to obtain a 780 phase
displacement between the currents in the two windings.
(iii) Locked rotor torque for the conditions in (ii)
