6 Fall weather and adverbs of degree

Look at the box below.

The line below shows adverbs of degree.

We use adverbs of degree to show the level of something.

They go before the adjective.

It’s very cold in London at this time of year.

(very cold = there is a high level of cold)

They answer the question how.....?

A: How rainy is it today?

B: It’s quite rainy.

We can use not with very.

It’s not very windy in Cracow.

We can’t use not with a bit, a little, fairly, and extremely in this way.

It’s not a little hot in Madrid.

(When you use not with quite the meaning is different.)

Narrator: Autum is the season after summer and before winter. In the United States this season in
called fall.

Narrator: In most places in the Northern hemisphere, fall begins in the last week of September and
finishes near the end of December. In the Southern hemisphere this season starts in March

5. Festivals and special days in fall

Students should work in pairs. Give the correct answers to the students after the activity, and then they can
compare scores.

6. Fall weather and adverbs of degree

Make sure students understand the explanation. Use more examples to demonstrate if you need to. Then,
students can do the first part of the exercise alone, and the second part in pairs. Give students a time limit of
3-5 minutes to talk about fall weather in their hometowns. Monitor the activity and make a note of any errors
and useful vocabulary.

Please note that "quite" in American English can mean "very" or "fairly" depending on the context and intonation.
