Candid, the nephew of the Baron, one of the powerful lords in Westphalia. Baron had a
daughter named Cunegonde. She was young and beautiful. Due to Candid's love for
Cunegonde, they exchanged a kiss and were caught by Baron. Hence, Candid was thrown out
of the Castle. With a heavy heart, tears, hunger, and fatigue, he stood at the door of an inn.
Some generous men welcomed Candid. After some time, he was handcuffed and taken away
to the Bulgar army. Finally, the Bulgarian Majesty pardoned Candid for his skillfulness.
Candid arrives in Holland, where he meets Jacques, who cares for him. Pangloss informs
Candid that the Baron family has been killed. Candid, Pangloss, and Jacques left for Portugal.
Due to an accident, Jacques drowned; Candid, Pangloss, and the sailor survived and ended up
in Lisbon. There, they experienced an earthquake, with many people dead. An old lady takes
care of Candid and escorts him to Cunegonde, whom Candid thought to be dead. Cunegonde
