Assignment 1
Assignment 1
Q1. Air enters a multistage compressor at static pressure of 1 bar and 300 K. The inlet velocity
is velocity 50 m/s. The overall pressure ratio across the compressor is 25. The total-to-total
efficiency is 0.86. If the exit velocity is 300 m/s, find (a) its total-to-static efficiency and (b) its
static-to-static efficiency. Assume that the air is an ideal gas with constant specific heats.
Q2. A hydraulic turbine having diameter of 1.12 m working with a head of 101 m of water
generates power of 2542 kW at a speed of 375 rpm. The flow rate through the turbine is 3 m 3/s.
For this prototype turbine determine (a) unit speed, (b) unit flow, (c) unit power, (d) specific
flow, and (e) specific power of the turbine.
If the model turbine is to be fabricated with one-fourth size of the prototype and water
at head of 10 m, then find out the (a) flow rate (b) Speed at which the model is to be tested and
(c) power output of the model.
Q3. At a certain location, the velocity of air flowing in a duct is 321.5 m/s. At that location, the
stagnation pressure is 700 kPa and stagnation temperature is 450 K. What is the static density
at this location?
Q4. Water at temperature T1 = 20 ◦C flows through a turbine with inlet velocity V1 = 3 m/s,
static pressure p1 = 780 kPa, and elevation z1 = 2m. At the exit, the conditions are V2 = 6m/s,
p2 = 100 kPa, and z2 = 1.2 m. Find the specific work delivered by the turbine assuming it to be
reversible.
Q5. Steam is supplied to the first stage of a five-stage pressure-compounded steam turbine at
a stagnation pressure of 1.5 MPa and a stagnation temperature of 350 °C. The steam leaves the
last stage at a stagnation pressure of 7.0 kPa with a corresponding dryness fraction of 0.95. By
using a Mollier chart for steam and assuming that the stagnation state point locus is a straight
line joining the initial and final states, determine
i. the stagnation conditions between each stage assuming that each stage does the same amount
of work;
ii. the total-to-total efficiency of each stage;
iii. the overall total-to-total efficiency and total-to-static efficiency assuming the steam enters
the condenser with a velocity of 200 m/s;
iv. the reheat factor based upon stagnation conditions.
