Software

A computer system consists of hardware and


software. We use software or programs to complete
activities in a computer, that is software means all the
programs that can be run in a computer. A software
application carries out tasks that the user is interested in
doing such as writing a letter, creating graphs, sending an
email or downloading a webpage.
Software applications work through the operating system to
gain access to the hardware.

Categories of software
There are two (2) main types of software: system and
application

System software are programs that enable the computer


system to run properly and efficiently. It is designed to
control the performance of the hardware and facilitate the
running of application software.
There are three types of system software which are an
operating system, utilities, and translators.
The operating system
The operation system enables the hardware devices to
function together as a computer system. All computers have
an operating system, they cannot function without one.
The operating system is a program that allows applications
software to communicate with the hardware.
Examples of operating systems are Windows Vista, Windows
XP, Unix, Linux and MacOS
Its main functions include:
● providing a friendly user interface- A User Interface is
the software that enables you to provide instructions and
to control the device.
● providing and maintaining security- usernames and
passwords
● managing tasks- Deals with saving, deleting, opening,
closing files
● file and memory management-Organising files and
folders; Sorting out where to store data on disk drives.
● managing computer resources-Managing data transfer
from the CPU to the peripherals e.g. printer, monitor
Application Software

A software application carries out tasks that the user is


interested in doing such as writing a letter, creating
graphs, sending an email or downloading a webpage.

Software applications work through the operating system


to gain access to the hardware.
Application software are programs developed to perform
specific tasks or to solve a particular problem.

Application software can be categorized as follows:


o General purpose
o Special purpose
o Integrated Package
o Custom written
o Customized
o Off the shelf
