OPERATIONS RESEARCH

Unit I
Problems on Linear Programming
Graphical Method

1. The ABC company has been a producer of picture tubes for television sets and certain printed circuits
for radios. The company has just expanded into full scale production and marketing of AM and AM-FM
radios. It has built a new plant that can operate 48 hours per week. Production of an AM radios in the
new plant will require 2 hours and production of an AM-FM radio will require 3 hours. Each AM
radio will contribute Rs. 40 to profits while an AM-FM radio will contribute Rs. 80 to profits. The
marketing department, after extensive research, has determined that a maximum of 15 AM radios and
10 AM-FM radios can be sold each week.

(i) Formulate a LP model to determine the optimal production mix of AM and AM-FM radios
that will maximize profits.
(ii) Solve the above problem using the graphic method.

2. A machine producing either product A or B can produce A by using 2 units of chemicals and 1 unit of a
compound and can produce B by using 1 unit of chemical and 2 units of the compound. Only 800 units
of chemicals and 1,000 units of compound are available. The profits available per unit of A and B are
respectively Rs. 30 and Rs. 20. Draw a suitable diagram to show the feasible region. Also find the
optimum allocation of units between A and B to maximize the total profit. Find the maximum profit.

3. Upon completing the construction of his house, Mr. Natarajan discovers that 700 square feet of plywood
scrap and 800 square feet of white pine scrap are in usuable form for the construction of tables and book
cases. It takes 16 square feet of plywood and 8 square feet of white pine to make a table; 12 square feet
of plywood and 16 square feet of white pine are required to construct a book case. By selling the
finished products to a local furniture store, Mr. Natarajan can realize a profit of Rs. 25 on each table and
Rs. 20 on each book case. How may he most profitably use the left over wood ? Use graphical method
to solve this problem.

4. Solve the following using graphical method :
Maximize Z = 9X + 10Y
Subject to :
11X + 9Y < 9,900
7X + 12Y < 8,400
6X + 16Y < 9,600
X > 0, Y > 0

5. Solve graphically :
Maximize Z = 10x + 15x
Subject to :
2x1 + x2 < 26
2x1 + 4x2 < 56
x1 - x2 > -5
x1, x2 > 0

6. Solve the following LPP using graphical method.
Maximize Z = 80x1 + 120x2
Subject to constraints :
x1 + x2 < 9
x1 > 2
x2 > 3
20x1 + 50x2 < 360

and x1, x2 > 0

7. Solve graphically :

Maximize Z = 120x1 + 100x2

Subject to Constraints :

10x1 + 5x2 < 80

6x1 + 6x2 < 66
4x1 + 8x2 > 24
5x1 + 6x2 < 90

Non-Negativity Restriction
x1, x2 > 0

8. Solve using graphical method :

Minimize Z = 3x1 + 5x2

Subject to Constraints :

x1 + x2 < 200
x1 < 80
x2 > 80

Non-Negativity Restriction :
x1, x2 > 0
