CE 416:

Properties of Reinforced Concrete

HYDRAULICS
BEAMS

Beams are structure that carries load either from slab system, canopy, and other loads directly upon it;
which rest and distrbute its reactive loads to an adjacent columns or load bearing wall

Minimum configurations for Beams

NSCP Table 409.3.1.1 Minimum Depth of Non-Prestressed Beams

Support Condition Minimum h
Simply supported l/16
One-end Continuous l/18.5
Both-end Continuous l/21
Cantilever l/8
[1] Expression applicable for normal weight concrete and fy=420 MPa. For other cases minimum h shall be modified in accordance with Section
409.3.1.1.1 through 409.3.1.1.3, as applicable

409.3.1.1
For fy other than 420 MPa, the expressions in the table shall be multiplied by (0.4+ fy/700)

407.3.1.1.2
For non-prestressed beams made lightweight concrete having wc in the range of 1440 to 1840 kg/m3 the expressions in
the tbale shall be multiplied by the greater of:
a) 1.65-0.0003(wc)
b) 1.09

Bars

CE 416: PRINCIPLES OF REINFORCED/PRESTRESSED CONCRETE TOPI

NSCP 425.1 Minimum spacing of Reinforcement

425.2.1
For parallel non prestressed reinforcement in a horizontal layer, clear spacing shall be atleast the greatest of 25mm, d b
and (4/3)(dagg)

425.2.2
For parallel non prestressed reinforcement placed in two or more horizontal layers, reinforcement in the upper layers
shall be placed directly above reinforcement in the bottom layer with a clear spacing between layers of at leasr 25mm

425.7.2.2

Diameter of tie bar or wire shall be at least:

a)10mm dsb enclosing 32mm dsb or smaller longitudinal bar
b)12mm dsb enclosing 36mm dsb or larger longitudinal bar or bundled longitudinal bars

A 300mm x 500mm reinforced concrete beam has a concrete cover of 70mm. It has an f’c = 34 Mpa,
fy=420 Mpa and it is reinforced with two (2) bars of the same size at the compression zone. Determine
the nominal moment capacity of the section, in kNm if it has a tension steel of:

a) 4-25mm DSB

b) 6-28mm DSB

c) 8-32mm DSB
