Tutorial Assignment 3

CBE 2220a- Chemical Process Calculations

Complete in class and submit by Tuesday October 1 -online submission

Q.1. In a given reactor, the following reaction is carried out CO + Cl2 → COCl2. If the reaction
products contained 3 lb Cl2 , 10 lb of COCl2 and 7 lb of CO. What is the extent of reaction and
initial composition of the feed on a mass basis? Assume no COCl2 is initially present in the feed
stream.

Q.2. The waste acid from a nitrating process contains 36% HNO3, 33% H2SO4, and 31% H2O (all
mass fractions). This acid needs to be strengthened by the addition of concentrated acids
containing 95% (by weight) H2SO4 and 78% (by weight) HNO3. The final strength of the mixed
acid is to contain 43% HNO3, 40% H2SO4, and 17% H2O. What is the weight of the waste acid and
the concentrated acid to yield 1500 Kg of the desired mixture. Carry out a degree of freedom
analysis.

Q.3. Crystallization is a unit operation where a concentrate is produced by cooling and

evaporation. The mother liquor is a term used in industry for the solution left after crystallization.
. A 6400 Kg solution containing 29.6% (w/w) of is added to a crystallization unit and cooled. Ten
percent of the water in the feed is lost by evaporation. The product Na2SO4.10 H2O crystallizes
out and the mother liquor contains 18.3% Na2SO4. What is the weight of the mother liquor
formed and the weight of the crystals formed. Carry out a degree of freedom analysis. Given
molecular weight of Na2SO4 is 142 and H2O is 18.

Q.4. A well known reaction to generate hydrogen from steam is the WATER GAS SHIFT REACTION.
CO + H2O → CO2 + H2. If the gaseous feed to a reactor consists of 30 moles of CO per hour, 12
moles of CO2 per hour, at 35 moles of steam per hour at 800°C, and 80 moles of hydrogen are
produced per hour, calculate:

a. The degree of freedom for the system

b. the limiting reactant
c. the excess reactant
d. the actual extent of reaction
e. moles of all products formed and reactants remaining
f. the yield of H2 (Kg/KG steam)
g. the fractional conversion of steam to H2
Q 5. Hydrogen is used to reduce Fe2O3 to metallic iron according to the reaction:

Fe2O3 + 3H2 → 2Fe + 3H2O

The water is condensed and the unreacted hydrogen is recycled. Because the hydrogen in the
fresh feed contains 1% CO2 as an impurity, some of the hydrogen must be purged. The purge
rate is maintained such that the CO2 in the reactor feed remains at 3.5%. Also given, the ratio of
the recycle to fresh feed as 5:1 on a molar basis. Assume 100 mol/h of feed.

a) Develop a flow sheet for the process

b) Carry out a degree of freedom analysis for the mixer, reactor, condenser, splitter, process
and overall? Where is the degree of freedom zero.
c) What is the flow rate and composition of the purge stream?
