1. Compute the heat of reaction at 600 K for the following reaction:

Given: Standard heat of formation of SO2 = -296.90 kJ/gmol;

CpSO2 = 38.91 + 3.904 x 10-2 T – 3.104 x 10-5 T2 + 8.606 x 10-9 T3 ; J/gmol. Deg C
CpO2 = 29.10 + 1.158 x 10-2 T – 0.6076 x 10-5 T2 + 1.311 x 10-9 T3 ; J/gmol. Deg C
CpS = 15.2 + 2.68 x 10-2 T ; (SOLID) ; J/gmolK
CpS = 17.95 + 0.63 x 10-3 T ; (LIQUID) ; J/gmol K
Latent heat of melting for sulfur = 10000 J/gmol

2. Dry coke composed of 4% (by weight) inert solids (ash), 90% carbon and 6% hydrogen
at 40°C is burnt in a furnace with dry air at 40°C. The solid refuse at 200°C that leaves the
furnace contains 10% C and 90% inert and no hydrogen. The ash does not react. The Orsat
analysis of the flue gas which is at 1100°C gives 13.9% CO2, 0.8% CO, 4.3% O2, and
81.0% N2. Calculate the heat transfer to or from the process. Use a constant Cp for the inert
of 8.5 J/g. Assume a basis of 100 gmol of dry flue gas stream.

Data:
Standard heats of formation kJ/gmol:
CO2 -393.595; CO -110.541; H2O (g) -241.826
Cp J/gmol.deg C:
CO2 44.2; O2 31.65; CO 30.93; N2 29.98; H2O 37.60

3. Carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide as in the following reaction:

CO + ½ O2 -→ CO2

Assume 100 gmol of CO at 300 deg C, 100 gmol of O2 at 100 deg C, open steady state process
and a pressure of 1 atm. The product CO2 is at 400 deg C.
Draw a schematic diagram for the process
Complete the table below:
Component mols T (deg C) Std Heat of Sensible Enthalpy
formation heats (kJ)
(kJ/gmol) (kJ/gmol)
IN
O2 100 - 2.235
CO 300 -110.541 8.294
OUT
O2 400 - 11.715
CO2 400 -393.505 16.245

How much heat needs to be added/removed to/from the system?

4. A synthesis gas at 500 deg C that analyzes 6.4% CO2, 0.2

% O2, 40% CO and 50.8% H2 and the balance N2 is burnt with 40 percent dry excess air
which is at 25 deg C. The temperature of the flue gas is 720 deg C. Assuming the reactions:
H2+ ½ O2 → H2O and CO + ½ O2→ CO2, calculate the flue gas composition and calculate
the heat transfer to or from the combustion process.
Data:
Std Heats of formation:
CO2 -393.505 kJ/gmol; CO -110.541 kJ/ gmol; H2O (g) -241.835 kH/ gmol

Specific heat capacity Cp (J/gmol. deg C)
