What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you to collect and organize data using a frequency distribution table. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. Lessons
are arranged in the standard sequence of the course, but the order may be
different from the textbook that you are using.

This module is divided into two lessons, namely:

What’s New

Study this situation.

Amidst the COVID19 pandemic in the country, the government

would like to know the number of recipients of the Social Amelioration
Program in the Municipality of Plaridel. The first recipients consist of
20 individuals in the near barangay. But, the government would like to
know the number of recipients according to gender.

a. Can you tell right away the number of recipients according to gender?
b. Where would you begin to solve this problem?

What Is It

A collection of data is done after the desired population is known. In

conducting a study, the population or sample to be taken should be parallel to
the objective of the study.

Population refers to a set of people, animals, objects, measurements,

and events involved in a statistical study wherein data are collected. The
members of the group selected from the population are known as the sample.

It can be illustrated using a Venn diagram.

Going back to problem number 1, which of the methods presented above

is very useful in finding the number of recipients according to gender?

Problem 1
Amidst COVID19 pandemic in the country, the government would
like to know the number of recipients of the Social Amelioration Program
in the Municipality of Plaridel. The first recipients consist of 20 individuals
in the near barangay, but the government would like to know the number
of recipients according to gender.

The very useful method used to answer problem 1 is interview because

the government will conduct a personal interview in every household to
determine the gender of the first 20 recipients of the Social Amelioration
Program in the Municipality of Plaridel.

8
Problem 2
Sarah wants to create a mathematical Model of the spread of Covid
19 virus in Region X. In order to do so, she coordinated with the
Department of Health and she requested a copy of the data of all Covid 19
cases in the said Region. What method of data gathering did Sarah use?

The very useful method used to answer problem 2 is registration

because Sarah will gather the data from the DOH to create a mathematical
model of the spread of the COVID19 virus in Region X.

Questions:
1. Which province has the largest number of COVID19 cases?
2. Which province has the smallest number of COVID19 cases?
3. What is the difference between the largest and the smallest number of
cases?

10
What is It

One way of organizing data in the most systematic and organized manner is
using a table. It is more effective when:

a. the title clearly states what the table is all about;

b. the data are arranged systematically in columns and properly labeled;
c. the date of the survey is indicated; and
d. the source of the data is properly identified.

Study the tabular form of the data found in the COVID 19 cases of Region X
activity.

As you can see, this type of presentation of data is easier to read and
interpret. This tabular method of organizing data is called Frequency
Distribution Table (FDT).

11
The frequency of observation tells you the number of times the
observation appears in the data.

For example, in the following list of numbers.

• Number 6 appears five times on the list. So, the frequency of the number
6 is 5.
• Frequency Distribution Table (FDT) also allows you to find patterns in
your data.

Example 1:
Elvie’s mother goes home with a box of assorted fruits. The fruits inside
the box are shown below.

To organize the given data in an FDT, simply follow the steps.

As you observe, even if we put the data into a frequency distribution

table, the distribution is quite long because it has too many different numbers.
To avoid this, we can shorten the table by compressing the data. We can use
grouped frequency distribution table.
Grouped Frequency Distribution Table takes into consideration
groups of data in the form of class intervals.
Class intervals are generally equal in width and are non-overlapping
from each other. In a class interval 5 – 10, the lower class limit is 5 and the
upper-class limit is 10. To use confidence intervals in FDT, follow the steps:

Steps Illustration
Step 1: Choose the number of In the given set of scores, use 5 as
classes of the distribution. the number of intervals or classes.
Class Interval = 5
Step 2: Get the range or the Range = Highest score – lowest
difference between the highest and score
the lowest values. = 50 – 25
=25

18
Steps Illustration
Step 3: Solve the class width or 𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒
Class size =
𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙
class size by dividing the range by
25
the number of intervals. =
5
=5
Step 4: Identify the starting point or Since the class size 5 is odd, then
the first lower class limit. If the class we will use 25 which is the multiple
size is even, use the lowest score as of 5 and is equal to the lowest score.
the starting point. If the class size is Scores Frequency
odd, use the multiple of the class 25 –
size which is less than or equal to
the lowest score, as the starting
point.

Step 5: Determine the next lower

class limit by adding the class size to Scores Frequency
the previous lower class limit. Stop 25 –
when you reached the highest score. 30 –
35 –
40 –
45 –
50 –

Step 6: Determine the upper-class

Scores Frequency
limit of all the intervals by subtracting
1 from the lower limit of the next 25 – 29

interval. For example, the lower limit 30 – 34

of the 2nd interval is 30. Then, 35 – 39

30 – 1 = 29. 40 – 44

Therefore, the upper-class limit of 45 – 44

the first interval is 29. 50 – 54

19
Steps Illustration
Step 7: Add all the frequencies of
the scores within the interval. For Scores Frequency
example, the first interval is 25 – 29. 25 – 29 7
So, add all the frequencies from 25 30 – 34 15
up to 29. That is, 35 – 39 14
2 + 0 + 0 + 3 + 2 = 7. 40 – 44 3
Therefore, the frequency for the first 45 – 44 9
interval is 7. 50 – 54 2

Step 8: Finalize your Frequency Frequency Distribution of the Test

Distribution Table (FDT). Scores of 50 Grade 7 Students
