MAT 152 Proportion Lab

Unit 1 Data Collection

Introduction
The purpose of this lab is to articulate any bias that your statistical study may have.
The guiding questions below will help you clearly identify the research question, the
population to be studied, the sampling methods, and the sample data. We will be
studying a claim made by Mars Inc in 2008. They advertised that the color
distribution of M&Ms should be as described in the table below.

ORANG YELLO
BLUE BROWN GREEN RED

24% 13% 16% 20% 13% 14%

We will test this claim using the process of statistics.

1. Identify the research objective.
2. Collect the data needed to answer the question posed.
3. Describe the data collected.
4. Perform inference.
Our research question is “Is the Mars claim about blue M&Ms true?”. We will be
purchasing a 1.69oz bag of plain M&Ms from a local store to use as our sample.
Guiding Questions
1. What is the population we are studying?

2. What parameter are we studying?

3. Is the type of variable we are studying qualitative or quantitative?

4. Are we conducting an observational or experimental study?

5. Is this a cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort study?

6. Are we using a simple random, stratified, systematic, cluster, or convenience

sampling method?

8. What statistic is relevant to the research question? Be as specific as possible.

Summary
9. Write a paragraph explaining your sampling technique. Your explanation
should be detailed enough that another person could replicate your
technique.

10.Write a paragraph explaining what bias may be in your sample and what bias
should not be in your sample because of your sampling technique. Be sure to
clearly articulate how your methods affected any bias.
