6. Why hardness is expressed in terms of CaCO3 equivalent.
7. Explain Calgon method of water softening.
8. Temporary Hardness is removed by boiling write chemical reactions in support of your
answer.
9. How are scales formed in boilers discuss four disadvantages of scale formation in boilers.
10. What is the basic principle of lime-soda process.
11. Explain why Calgon conditioning is better than phosphate conditioning.
12. Show with the help of reactions how scale formation can be prevented by Calgon
conditioning.
13. Explain why double amount of lime is required to remove the magnesium bicarbonate.

Sec-B

1. Give the difference between sludge and scale.

2. What is caustic Embrittlement of water?
3. State Zeolite process the removal of hardness of water.
4. What is reverse osmosis? Explain with application.
5. Discuss the corrosion of boiler by hard water and its control methods.
6. How many grams of CaSO4 dissolved per liter gives 70 ppm of hardness.
7. A water sample contains the following impurities. Ca+2= 20 PPM, Mg+2= 18 PPM, HCO3- =183
PPM. Calculate the Lime and Soda needed for softening 1 liter of water.
8. A zeolite softener was 90 % exhausted, when 10,000 liter of hard water was passed through it.
The softener required 200 L of NaCl solution.(50gm NaCl/ Liter of Solution). What is the
Hardness of water?
9. Calculate the Temporary and Permanent hardness of water sample, having the following analysis.
Mg (HCO3)2=73 mg/l, CaSO4=136 mg/l, CaCl2=111 mg/l, Ca (HCO3)2=162 mg/l, MgCl2=95
mg/l, NaCl=100 mg/l

10. What are Resins how hard water can be purified by Ion exchange resins compare its merits and
demerits over lime- Soda process.
11. Compare merits and demerits of Zeolite and Ion Exchange method.

Sec-C
1. Explain Lime soda process for removal of hardness of water.
2. What are ion- exchange resins? How will you purify water by using these resins?
3. Discuss the different methods of internal treatment for boiler feed water.
4. Calculate the amount of lime and soda required for the treatment of 20,000 liters of water whose
analysis is as follows: Ca (HCO3)2 = 40.5 ppm; Mg (HCO3)2 = 36.5 ppm; CaSO4 = 34 ppm; CaCl2
= 27.75 ppm.
5. A water sample has the analytical report as under. MgCO 3=84 mg/L, CaCO3=40 mg/L,
CaCl2=163 mg/L, KCl=20 mg/L, Mg (NO3)2=37 mg/L. Calculate the amount of lime (84% pure)
and Soda (83% pure) needed for the treatment of 80,000 Liter of water.
6. A completely exhausted zeolite softener requires 500 L of NaCl solution of strength 50 g/L for
complete regeneration. How much volume of hard water having hardness 700 ppm can be
softened by this softener?
7. Calculate the lime (80% pure) and soda (90% pure) needed for softening 80,000L of water
containing the following salts: MgSO4 = 13.6 mg/L, CaCl2 = 11.1 mg/L, Mg (HCO3)2 = 14.6
mg/L, Ca (HCO3)2 = 8.1 mg/L.
8. What is the basic principle of Lime- soda process? A water sample using FeSO4.7H2O as a
coagulant at the rate of 139 ppm gave the following data: Mg2+=72 ppm, Ca2+=60 ppm, CO2=
44 ppm, HCO3- =61 ppm. Calculate the amount of lime and soda needed for the treatment of
80,000 liters of water.
