Lesson 5
Part 1
Normal Distribution
LAB ACTIVITIES

Heights of People The average height of a certain age group of people is 53

inches. The standard deviation is 4 inches. If the variable is normally distributed,
find the probability that a selected individual’s height will be
a) Greater than 59 inches
b) Less than 45 inches
c) Between 50 and 55 inches
d) Determine the minimum height in the top 10%.
e) Interpret the result in part d.
f) What is the minimum height would you consider to be an extremely low?

PART 2
Correlation and Regression

The following table represents the number of absences and the final grade of
seven students selected from a statistics class.
Number of Absences(X) 6 2 15 9 12 5 8
Final Grade(Y) 8 86 43 74 58 90 78
2

a. Construct the scatter diagram to determine the relationship between Number of

Absences and Final Grade
b. Find the value of the linear correlation coefficient (r).
c. Determine whether there is a significant linear correlation between the two variables.
d. If there is a positive/negative linear correlation, find the equation of the regression line.
e. Interpret the value of the slope (i.e. the value of b)
f. What is the best predicted final grade of a student who had 4 absences?
