NOVEMBER 2019
(Regular – 2019 Admission)
Physics
PHY1 C03: Electrodynamics and Plasma Physics

Time: 3 Hours Max. Weightage: 30

I. Answer all of the following: (8 x 1 = 8 Weightage)

1. Outline the advantages of using phasors in electromagnetics.
2. Define group velocity. Explain the cases in which the group velocity is different from the
phase velocity.
3. Analyze the case in which the finite transmission line is matched.
4. Derive an expression for quality factor of a parallel resonant circuit with well insulated
line.
5. Single conductor waveguides cannot support TEM waves. Why?
6. Prove that 𝐸 𝟐 − 𝑐 2 𝐵2 is relativistically invariant.
7. Write down the electromagnetic field tensor Fν and the dual tensor Gν.
8. On the basis of fluid theory, briefly explain the origin of plasma oscillations.

II. Answer any two of the following: (2 x 5 = 10 Weightage)

9. Discuss in detail, the reflection and transmission of an e.m. wave (perpendicular
polarization) incident obliquely at a plane dielectric boundary. Mention the important
theoretical observations.
10. Derive the expressions for (i) inductance per unit length; (ii) capacitance per unit length
for a transverse electromagnetic wave along a parallel plane transmission line. Hence
arrive at the equations for the instantaneous current and voltage along the line.
11. Formulate Maxwell’s equations and Lorentz force law in relativistic notations.
12. Describe the Debye shielding in plasma. Derive an expression for Debye length and
explain plasma in terms of Debye length.

III. Answer any four of the following: (4 x 3 = 12 Weightage)

13. What is meant by the skin depth of a conductor? How is it related to the attenuation
constant? Obtain its dependence on ‘σ’ and on ‘f’?
14. A circular ring in the x-y plane (radius R, centered at the origin) carries a uniform line
charge λ. Find the first three terms (n = 0, 1, 2) in the multipole expansion for V (r, θ).

15. A signal generator of internal resistance 1 ohm with an open circuit voltage of
0.3cos(2π108t) V is connected to a 50 ohm lossless transmission line of 4 m long.
The wave propagates on the line with a velocity of 2.5 x 10 8 m/s. Find the instantaneous
expressions for the voltage and current at an arbitrary location on the line, for a matched
load.
16. Write the instantaneous field expressions for the TM11 mode in a rectangular waveguide
of sides ‘a’ and ‘b’.
17. Obtain the transformation equations for the x, y, z components of the electric and
magnetic fields when we move from one inertial frame to another with a relative
velocity ‘v’.
18. For a low density plasma, the dispersion relation is given by ω 2 = ω02 + c2k2, where k
is the wave vector and ω0 the plasma frequency. Derive a relation between the phase
velocity and group velocity of the plasma.
19. Compute Debye length and number of particles in Debye sphere for n = 1016 m3.
