FIRST SEMESTER M.Sc. (CSS) DEGREE EXAMINATIONS,

NOVEMBER 2015
Physics
PHYI C03: Electrodynamics and Plasma Physics
Time: 3 Hours Maximum Weightage: 36

I. Give short answers to all the questions: (12 x 1 = 12 Weightage)

1. Deduce the integral form of Maxwell's equations.
2. State the electromagnetic boundary conditions.
3. Obtain the homogeneous vector wave equations for E and H for a source free
region.
4. Define group velocity. In what way does it differ from phase velocity?
5. What is skin depth? Write down the expression for the same and explain.
6. What is the input impedance of an open circuited transmission line if the length of
the line is a) λ/4, b) 3λ/4?
7. Explain why single conductor hollow or dielectric-filled wave guides cannot
support TEM waves?
8. What is meant by cut of frequency of a wave guide? Can a wave guide have more
than one cut off frequency?
9. Write down the components of 4-vector potential.
10. Obtain the equation of continuity in tensor notation.
11. Explain plasma frequency. Deduce an expression for the plasma frequency.
12. What is Debye shielding? Obtain an expression for Debye length.
II. Answer any two questions: (2 x 6 = 12 Weightage)
13. Discuss the case of uniform plane wave incident on a reflecting plane conducting
surface obliquely for perpendicular polarisation.
14. Discuss the propagation of TM waves in a rectangular wave guide and obtain the
expression for the field components, cut-off frequency and phase velocity.
15. Discuss the motion of charged particles in uniform electric and magnetic fields and
obtain the expression for drift velocity.
16. Obtain the relativistic transformation equation for the field vectors E and B.
III. Answer any four questions: (4 x 3 = 12 Weightage)
17. Derive Maxwell’s two Divergence equations from the Curl equations and the
Equation of continuity.
18. It is found that the attenuation on a 50(ᾨ) distortionless transmission line is 0.01
(dB/m). The line has a capacitance of 0.01(nF/m). Find
(a) The resistance, inductance, and conductance per meter of the line.
(b) The velocity of propagation.
19. Prove that the resonant frequency of a rectangular cavity resonator in the TEmnp
mode is fmnp = u/2 (√((m/a)2 + (n/b)2 + (p/d)2))

20. A standard air filled rectangular wave guide with dimensions a=8.636 cm, b=4.318
cm is fed by a 4 GHz carrier from a coaxial cable. Determine whether a TE10 mode
will be propagated. If so, calculate the phase velocity and group velocity.
21. Show that
(a) E.B is relativistically invariant.
(b) E2 - c2B2 is relativistically invariant.
22. Rewrite Maxwell’s equation and the Lorentz gauge condition in Tensor notation.
