1. Purchase of a dog license is required by Patrick County
ordinance for all dogs 4 months or older. License tags are
available for purchase at the Patrick County Treasurer’s
office.
2. Kennel and Hybrid dog licenses are purchased for one
year, go on sale November 1st each year and run by
calendar year January 1st - December 31st.
3. To purchase a dog license a current and unexpired
certificate of vaccination of rabies is required to be
presented to the Treasurer of Patrick County within 90
days of the vaccination. Effective July 1, 2007, per 3.1-
796.87:1 of the Code of Virginia, veterinarians are
required to provide within 45 days of giving a rabies
vaccine a copy of the rabies certificate or the information
contained in such a certificate to the Treasurer of the
locality in which they practice. If the Treasurer
determines that the owner of the animal has failed to
apply for a license within 90 days of the date of the
vaccination, the Treasurer shall transmit an application to
the owner and request the owner to submit a completed
application and pay the appropriate fee.
4. Dog License Fees are as follows:

5. The lifetime tag is good for the life of the dog as long as
the dog’s rabies vaccination remains current. IF THE
RABIES VACCINATION EXPIRES, THE LIFETIME TAG
BECOMES VOID. The dog must then be vaccinated and a
new lifetime tag purchased.
6. The lifetime tag is non-transferrable to any other dog or
any other dog owner. The lifetime tag is non-
transferrable to other localities.
7. Cats are also required, by state law, to be vaccinated for
rabies at 4 months, but no Patrick County License tag is
required for cats.
8. THERE IS NO PRORATION OR REFUND OF DOG LICENSING
FEES.
