Week of January 23-27

Whats Hop-pening in Kindergarten

Ooki-tooki-unga...
We sang an Inuit fishing song this week and pretended to row boats and eventually catch a whale...not to worry, we delivered the whale safely to Sea World. We each had Inuit names that had special meaning. We made a little Inuit figure and attached our photos to it. We wrote our names and what we liked in our Inuit world. These are in the hallway. We also made scrimshaws. The fisherman would carve whale teeth as they traveled. We used bars of soap and toothpicks to carve them. We also made inukshuks, traditional Inuit rock sculptures that marked the location of good fishing or hunting spots or stored food. We looked at images in books and we viewed a video online. We painted with a sand/paint mixture to create our snowy scene. Then we used paper rocks to create an inuskshuk.

Math
We sorted and graphed our shoes this week. Boy, were they surprised when I asked them to take off their shoes!! We also played with a new math material called geoboards. These are boards with pegs on which we stretch geobands, rubber bands, to make shapes and designs. We loved these!! We also formed numbers with sugar cubes, or ice blocks, to form numbers. We also counted and placed ice blocks on numbered igloos.

Religion
We are remembering how special we each are and how God gave us many talents.

TUESDAY RECESS HELP

We are in need of a parent/family member to supervise the noon hour recess time from 1212:30 for the rest of the school year. You can bring your children from home if needed. Thanks!

Science
Our student of the week made a paperclip float. WOW! Come try it at open house in our classroom!

MILK JUGS!!
We have counted 243 milk jugs! We still need more!! Thank you!!

Social Studies
We celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday. It is the year of the Dragon. We made dragon puppets and moved our own puppets as we watched videos of Dragon parades. We listened to a story of why the Chinese wear and decorate with red on this holiday. We also used a sheet with an attached dragon head and had a little parade down the hallway. We each had a chance to be at the front of the dragon.

February Family Project...

Each child will be asked to bring in a collections of 100 things on 2/7, the 100th day of school. This can be anything...matchbox cars, barrettes, raisins, pennies, etc. The sky is the limit. I am also in need of some parents to help blow up 100 balloons. Let me know if you are interested and I will send home balloons for you!

Reading
We read the story titled Immis Gift. We discussed cause and effect this week. The main character in our story kept catching colorful items like little birds and flowers. We journaled about what we might catch if we put our fishing poles into an icy fishing hole. Some caught aliens, cookies, and other fun things. We focused on the /d/ and the / k/ sound. We practiced positional words with the help of Nanuk, a stuffed polar bear. We moved him under, behind, etc. an igloo.

Upcycled Snowmen!
The snowmen are wonderful! They will be on display for open house...They will be sent home on Monday...feel free to stop in and pick them up in the morning if you wish!
