Logical Connection of Ideas
The coherence of a text is done through several means; one of them is the use of
connectors. Connectors link ideas and paragraphs. Look at the example below and see
how ideas are connected.
“ The Earth is 4.5 billiion years old, but the human race has lived on it for just 200,000 years.”
The two sentences are joined (connected) by the connector or conjunction but which
works as a contrasting element (the second idea opposes to the first one).
It is very important to be able to recognize connective words and understand the logical
relationship they establish: CONTRAST, ADDITION, CAUSE, RESULT, EXEMPLIFICATION,
SUMMARY, TIME-SEQUENCE, CONDITION, etc.
They can occur in three positions in a sentence: initial (beginning) position, medial (middle)
position, and final (end) position.
Initial position:
