CASE STUDY 1
Akhilesh, a carpenter in the small town of Alwar used to make and sell different
items made of wood like a rectangular box, cylindrical and cuboidal pen stands,
stands for keeping flowerpots etc. One day Kavita came to his shop and asked
him to make a wooden planter stand for keeping pots of indoor plants with the
following dimensions:
A stand should be in the shape of the cuboid with three cylindrical depressions
to hold the pots. The dimensions of the cuboidal stand should be 50 cm x 20 cm
x 12 cm. The radius and height of each depression should be 7 cm and 10 cm
respectively.
By using the above given information, Answer the following:
1. Find the surface area of the cuboid.
2. Find the surface area of the cuboid excluding the cylindrical depressions.
3. If one cubical can of paint can paint an area of 1906 sq cm, how many cans of
paint will be required to paint the wooden planter including the cylindrical
depressions?
a) 6 b) 5 c) 4 d) 2
Akhilesh wants to plant the saplings in the cylindrical depressions.
4. Find the amount of soil required (in cubic metres) to fill the cylindrical
depressions to plant the saplings.
CASE STUDY 2
Anup after retirement thought to stay in village‘s
house. After going there he foundthere was shortage of
water in village, so he thought of constructing a well.
He hiredsome labourers and guided them that well
should be 7m in diameter and 20m deep.
Reasons (R) –Volume of cuboid is the product of length, width and height.
Reasons (R) –Area of a circle is the region occupied by the circle in a two-dimensional plane. It can be determined
easily using a formula, A = πr2
