Every family has red letter days, whic are birthdays, namedays, wedding anniversaries. We celebrate
the birthday and nameday each member of our family. Lot of countries doesn’t celebrate namedays,
like France, Finnland and English-speaking countries, because it is out of fashion. But in Hungary
namedays are almost as important as birthdays and are celebrated in all families.

When we celebrate something, we constatntly go to our favorite restaurant, or if we celebrate at

home my mother and my grandmother cooks and bakes goodies every time. We celebrated my
birthday the last time. We didn’t go to a restaurant, because I was sick a little, so we just had a
delicious lunch, and I had a party later whit my friends.

Each school has own celebrations, like our. Every year at first we have opening ceremony, where the

important for every student in the 12th grade, especially for the girls. The pupils dance together in
beautiful dresses, and they get a ribbon. We also celebrate Bolyai’s day, at this time we celebrate the
founder of our school. During the year we also have basketball-, volleyball- and football-nights,
where the pupils can play sports until the evening. At the end of the year we have the farwell

We open the presents after dinner, and at midnight we go to the church for the midnight service. On
Christmas day and Boxing day relaives visit each other and have lunch together.

English people celebrate Christmas in a different way. When they go to bed, the children hang up old
stocking at the head of their bed for Father Winter to put presents in. The houses are also decorated
with evergreen plants like holly, ivy and mistletoe. Unlike many Eurpean countries, it’s Christmas
Day, not Christmas Eve, that is the most important day of the Christmas holidays. This is the day
when families comes together, presents are opened and dinner is eaten. Christmas dinner is usually
consists of of roast turkey and roast potato and vegetables with plum pudding. On 26 December,
Boxing Day, people gives gifts for regular callers, such as dustman and postmen. There are also

The next holiday is New Year’s Eve. In Hungary on New Year’s Eve people go to parties where they
eat traditional food like lentils and drink champagne and enjoy themself. At midnight they drink
champagne and sing the national anthem. Then people go to streets and watch the fireworks.

At Easter we celebrate the Resurrection, that is, the rising of Jesus Christ from the tomb three days
after his crucifixion. On Easter Sunday morning we eat ham, hard-boiled eggs and cold pork in aspic.
