Research the motion of a body released horizontally

Goal: to study the motion of a horizontally released body and its initial speed.

Equipment: a measuring tape (a ruler), wooden brick, a small ball (iron), metal trough, copy paper lime.

Theoretical basement:

Velocity of a uniformly accelerating body:

The distance traveled by a uniformly accelerating body:

The ball moves vertical and horizontal direction at the same

time t. Horizontal movement we describe like constant (uniform) movement. Vertically the ball moves with constant
acceleration a=g=10 ms-2.

Then:

v i=s

Work instruction.

1. Put the trough on the wooden brick and place the lower end of it out 20 – 30 cm from desk edge.
2. Place the copy paper lime under the edge of the desk.
3. Measure the height of the desk (h)
4. Let the ball fall from the desk on the paper without horizontal initial speed once.
5. Mark the place where ball has felt – it will be the beginning point of measurement ( x 0).
6. Then mark the starting point on the trough from where you will let the ball roll during each test.
7. Put the ball at that point on the trough and let it fall from the desk with some horizontal initial speed.
8. On the floor, where a ball has approximately felt down, put the copy paper lime.
9. Put the ball on the trough again and let it roll and fall on the floor (copy paper lime). Mark place where it has felt
and measure the distance it has flew during the fall s=x- x 0.
10. Repeat experiment for 5 times. And write the results into a box below.

Exp.No. h, m s, m v i, m s−1 Δs, m Δ v i, m s−1

Average
Calculate:

 The average distance flew by ball.

 The average initial velocity on the desk.
 Standard deviation of s and v i and it average values.
 Calculate the percentage errors of the measurements and write down the
conclusions.
